Sawchyn Ao-2 Octave Mandolin

Sawchyn AO-2 Octave Mandolin built by Peter Sawchyn, Regina, Saskatchewan in 2007; 23” scale length, 1 3/8” nut, 12 3/4” width, 2 3/4” depth. 36” total length. Select Sitka spruce carved top. Highly flamed maple (probably big leaf) carved back and sides. Mahogany neck. Ivoroid triple (w-b-w) bound top, back and headstock edges. Ivoroid-bound radiused ebony fingerboard. Ivoroid/herringbone rosette (like old Gibson K2). Ebony headstock overlay with MOP logo and fleur-de-lis inlay. MOP position markers and nut. Compensated, adjustable ebony bridge. Schaller tuners; Allen tailpiece. Hand-stained “French violin” color with hand-polished lacquer finish. Comes in a shaped, black, arch-top, Canada-made TKL-type case with red plush lining.

OM is in mint/like-new condition with no scratches, dings, scuffs, etc. I custom-ordered this instrument from Peter about 16 years ago, but shortly thereafter moved across country and took up the tenor banjo, and have hardly played the OM since. It has sat in its case for too long as a case queen, and it’s time to provide it a new home. Peter described this instrument model as one that “fits both dimensionally and tonally between the traditional mandola and mandocello.” Anyone who knows Peter’s work will be familiar with his attention to detail and impeccable workmanship - this is a lovely example. Peter has retired out of the business now and not building anymore.
