Hi All- I am interested in the method you use to assure that the neck is lined up with the mando body on glue up. I do a dovetail but don't always get it slop free so I use a straight edge with a cutout around the clamp to maintain a center line. Is there a better way? Thanks.

Frankly, a well made dovetail joint aligns itself and there is no need for maintaining alignment during glue-up; it is already taken care of by the process of fitting the dovetail. Sounds to me like your dovetail fitting technique needs some work. A good dovetail joint is slop free.

What John said. Good dovetail MUST be slop free. It should tighten to the point it is hard to pull the neck out even without glue.
You are looking for method of accurate FITTING the neck to body. Glue up is just simple thing.
There were few threads about cutting and fitting the dovetail, try searching.

Long straight line on table, straight line on neck blank, line up neck on line on table, center rim on table and neck, then outline the dovetail directly onto neck blank.

Easier to understand with a pic but don't have one atm.
