  1. Mandolin Mondays #42 - Bach Double

Happy Bachtober! What better way to celebrate than with flannel and the second movement from J.S. Bach's first Partita for Solo Violin. I've been working on this little subtle piece off and on for the past year and finally worked up the moxie to give it a go for a video. Hope you enjoy!

  2. Mandolin Mondays #41 - The Boxer

Trying to make the mandolin sound like finger picking on the guitar with this classic song by Paul Simon.

  4. Mandolin Mondays #39 - Blue Monk

Letting loose with this dissonant and spunky jazz blues by the great Thelonious Monk. One of my favorite quotes: "A note can be small as a pin or as big as the world, it depends on your imagination" ~ Monk.

Revisiting my arrangement of this childhood favorite to celebrate my niece's birthday this week. She turns two this year and Winnie the Pooh is her absolute favorite. Happy Birthday, Norah Grace!

  6. Mandolin Mondays #37 - The Old Mountaineer

Happy Birthday, Bill Monroe (Sept 13th)! My life would be completely different without your hand in making the mandolin into what it is today. So here's my watered down version of one of my favorite Monroe tunes "The Old Mountaineer." I compared notes on this piece with some great recordings by Mike Compton, Jimmy Campbell, and Kenny Baker.

  7. Mandolin Mondays #36 - Brejeiro

Here's a little Choro music to put you in the mood for Brazilian Independence Day (Sept 7th). Brejeiro is a very fun piece written by Brazilian pianist and composer Ernesto Nazareth--made popular on the mandolin by Jacob do Bandolim. This was my first time digging deeper into Choro music, and I had a lot of fun trying to incorporate the melody, harmony, and infectious rhythms all in one part.

  8. Mandolin Mondays #35 The Boat Tune

To finish out a month of collaborative Mandolin Mondays, here's a video from a recent show I did with my good friend Michael Moore down in Birmingham, AL, at this cool place called Moonlight on the Mountain. We recorded "The Boat Tune" on our duo record Each By Side last year. It was the first tune we ever wrote together and since has become a favorite of ours to perform and share.

  9. Mandolin Mondays #34 - "Indiana Firefly"

This year I've been working on a transcription book for John Reischman which includes tab and notation for all of his tunes and solos from his incredible record, Up in the Woods. This summer we met up at the Swannanoa Gathering, and he was kind enough to record one of the record tunes with me, and offer a free sneak peek at the tab/notation for this tune to anyone who wants it--in anticipation of the full book to be released later this fall. It was such a privilege to get to play alongside what ...
  10. Mandolin Mondays #33 - New Brick Road

This week I got a little help from the guy who's taught me just about everything I know about the mandolin, Matt Flinner. He showed me this great Norman Blake tune a while back and was kind enough to play some harmony on it with his incredible Gilchrist mandolin for this video. Thanks for everything, Matt!
