Just want to say thanks for these Mandolin Monday posts! It's really inspiring seeing all these fresh pickers! Not only is David's music fresh and creative, but it's awesome to see these other pickers too. I frequent YouTube to watch Matt demo the new mandolins at his local shop and always enjoyed his picking. Between him and David and the new guard rolling in its a very exciting time to be part of the mandolin community.

Hi Frosty,
Well, I did a few takes of the piece before deciding which one to use. After playing the last take, I was sure I wouldn't be using it as one of the other takes was surely better, so I sort of muttered "nah!" to myself and scraped the pick across the strings after the last chord. But after listening to all of the takes, I went with that one after all. I DID consider adding an explosion at the end, but it would have taken too much time to edit it in (and those books are highly flammable). Maybe next time.

Wow, that's amazing! I went over to youtube to hear the original--it is one thing to present this piece on 88 keys, 10 fingers producing harmony, and the huge dynamic range of a concert piano, and quite another on the mando. The artistry is how you've preserved the core of the piece while making it more intimate.

Wow. Fantastic stuff. There have been some real treats in the Mandolin Monday series.
I too love the Bright Size Life album. From the first listen, I heard something very different to any jazz I'd heard before. There was something deep, almost folksy, about the tunes and the textures and sense of space in the arrangements just added to that feeling.
This interpretation shows me my ears did not deceive me. Unity Village sounds completely at home on the mandolin and it brings out that earthy side to it. Thanks for sharing and the wonderful playing!

Rocky Road to Dublin is an extremely common name for both American old time tunes and some Irish tunes as well...Most of the melodies under this title are completely unrelated...but my version is somewhat similar to versions of this tune also played by 1920's fiddler's ,Bill Hensley(Polk County NC) and Alan Sisson(E.TN)
