Excellent. Deep connection to that tune. Maybe remnants of Swedish DNA from the Peterson side of my family.

Buchanan calls it a mandolin, and its scale length is 14.25", only a smidge longer than American standard mandolin scale. Most of my repertoire would be unplayable on a 16" scale, about which I am mystified. Viola scale length usually between 14.25" and 14.75". My viola is 14.5".

A big sound is mainly from a large enough volume, and mostly large top area. This instrument has 50% more internal volume than a Buchanan mandolin.

Nice! I heard this tune on the radio a few months ago, and found this version on youtube that I learned from:

You have some very nice variations in yours. I'll have to check out your basics video.

Very nice, and I agree that many tunes benefit from a more relaxed tempo that allows one to enjoy the melody. Not that I don't also admire and enjoy some pedal to the metal playing. Thanks for sharing this one!

Very nice Rainer, and sooo entirely different from how I would/do play it.

Hope to see you this year at the you know where, and maybe we´ll play both your and my take. It´ll be fun.

Phenomenal picking. And coincidentally, just saw another great video of Mr. Rueb picking on a Waterloo WL-M, inspired by the other thread on the recent demise of the Waterloo mandolin:

I really like that first piece, and I love the tone you're getting out of that A4! Playing back from the soundhole must really make it jump out in a session.

Before I even knew what a mandolin really was, I came across one of Otis Tomas' mandolins in a bookstore in eastern Long Island. It was pure poetry in the hand, and I corresponded with him briefly as I was getting into guitar making. Thank you for the reminder. That bowlback must be something special.

Claudine Langille must be on the phone with my daughter all the time. Because my daughter - when trying out my Strad-O-Lin - allways plays in the "AC/DC" position (way back there, close to the bridge).

I must admit, nice music pieces (I found out years ago that I rather like Turlough O Carolan), nicely played on a nice mandolin. What´s not to like.
