Mandolin Mondays #61 w/ Special Guest Ethan Setiawan

Rate this Entry
Today, special MM guest Ethan Setiawan takes on the monumental Chick Corea composition "Spain" with his Clark F5 Mandolin.

Ethan is a Berklee student here in Boston and is already known in acoustic circles for his diverse musicianship. He started out studying with jazz mandolin luminary Don Stiernberg, and since then he has continued to branch out into other styles such as bluegrass, funk, and many others. In 2014 he took first place in the National Mandolin Championship in Winfield, Kansas. Now, Ethan performs around the New England area with his progressive band of fellow Berklee students called OctoPladd.

Here's a word from Ethan about the tune: "I've always enjoyed the challenge of adapting jazz to the mandolin, driven in large part because mandolin is not a large part of jazz. So if we want to get inside it, we're most likely stealing from other instruments, something that puts outside our mandolinistic comfort zone. Jazz piano specifically presents some unique challenges given that pianos have an 8 octave range and can play 10 notes at a time and mandolins have a 3 octave range and can play 4 notes at a time. Furthermore, Chick Corea specifically is such a dramatic musician and soloist that any performance of his tunes has to embody something of that theatric element for me to enjoy it. Hope you enjoy my latest attempt at these things!"

I know Spain is covered frequently in many genres but I've never really listened to it. My first exposure to is via mandolin! Cool.
