Mandolin Mondays #95 w/ Special Guest Jake Howard

Rate this Entry
Mandolin Mondays #95: Jake Howard of the Page Turners is with us this week on Mandolin Mondays for an Old Time rager on his trusty Gerald Anderson F5 mando.

I first met Jake in 2014, at Mike Marshall's Acoustic Music Seminar and was impressed with his tasteful picking. He since has graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and helped start the successful touring band The Page Turners. In 2016, the band won the Freshgrass Duo Competition and it's been onwards and upwards for them since. Check out their recent EP HERE.

Here's Jake with a few words about the tune and the mandolin in this video, "I thought it would be cool to cross tune my mandolin for this week's Mandolin Monday, then I realized why every mandolin player needs twelve mandolins... for every cross tuning out there (at least that is what we tell ourselves right?). I eventually got around to playing 'Ways of the World,' a tune that has a great backbeat, driving feel. I learned this song from a source recording of William H. Stepp, who was recorded by Alan and Elizabeth Lomax in October of 1937 playing a cross tuned version. Believe it or not (Old Time joke coming up), Lomax recorded two completely different versions of this tune in Kentucky during October. The other version was recorded by Luther Strong and is in D Major, a drastic difference from Stepp's A mixolydian melody. Bruce Molsky was the one who popularized the tune among my friends in the Boston scene. Cross tune away my friends..

The mandolin I am playing is an F5 style mandolin built by Gerald Anderson in 1981. This was Gerald's third mandolin he built and happened while he was apprenticing/working at Wayne Henderson's shop. It was originally owned by Bobby Patterson of Galax and eventually found its way up to Elderly, where I purchased it in 2012. I have always loved the tone of this mandolin, it never gets old!"

I submitted tab for the tune to the Cafe today. I had tabbed in std tuning years ago, based on Jeff Todd Titon's AEAE fiddle transcription in his Old Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes book.
