The incredible Germany-based classical mandolinist Chris Acquavella brings us a beautiful original composition played on his 2019 Soloist Mandolin “Classico” built by Alfred Woll.
Chris Acquavella is a mandolinist, composer and educator from San Diego, CA, who currently lives in Mainz, Germany. He graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatory of Music and Dance in London, England. Chris studied mandolin performance with Alison Stephens and composition under the tuition of Andrew Poppy. In 2004, Chris won the Wolfs Foundation Music Award, was awarded the TCM Trust Silver Medal for String Studies in 2006 and won 1st Prize at the 2016 Call For Scores hosted by the KMGO.
As a classical mandolinist, Chris has released four CDs. He is the Director of the San Diego Classical Mandolin Camp. Aside from teaching and performing Chris Acquavella is a composer of new music for plucked string instruments. He is published through Astute Music Ltd. (UK) and Joachim Trekel Musikverlag, Hamburg (Germany).
Here's some inside info about the piece from Chris, "This is a solo mandolin version of the 3rd movement from my latest composition for mandolin orchestra titled Remembrance of a Beautiful Soul, available from Astute Music. This particular version has been abbreviated for Mandolin Mondays. Remembrance of a Beautiful Soul was commissioned by the British BMG Federation to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of Alison Stephens. The entire piece will be premiered on March 29, 2020 by the British National Fretted Orchestra. Serenade for Ali was originally composed in 2006 for Alison Stephens when she first told me that she was diagnosed with cancer. This solo composition was my gift to her. Now, fully orchestrated as the final movement of Remembrance of a Beautiful Soul, this lovely little piece has found it's final resting place."
