Italian classical mandolin maestro Dorina Frati joins us this week for Mandolin Mondays with a beautiful performance of Victor Kioulaphides' “Idillio“ played on her Calace Raffaele Modello Classico A mandolin.
Now considered one of the greatest contemporary classical virtuosos of the mandolin, Dorina Frati began studying the instrument at the age of six. When Italy’s first chair of mandolin was founded at the Conservatory of Padua, she enrolled to complete her training under maestro, Giuseppe Anedda, and became the first person in the country to graduate in mandolin studies. Her concert career began shortly afterwards. Over the yearhe has performed at concerts and festivals in Scotland, China, Finland, Greece, the USA, Portugal, Australia, Holland, Venezuela, Brazil, Yugoslavia, the Czech Republic and Japan. Now she teaches mandolin at the Luca Marenzio Conservatory of Music in Brescia, holding the chair that once belonged to her beloved teacher.
Dorina also has a wealth of recorded work. Her most recent album is a duo project with Davide Ferella that features Bach's harpsichord concertos transcribed for 2 mandolins. Give it a listen here: https://open.spotify.com/album/7I4r8T7CYovUK3RRtOQq4U
