This week on Mandolin Mondays we've got the great Reed Stutz with us to play the "Laurel Mountain Breakdown" on his 1927 Gibson F5.
Reed Stutz is a Durham, North Carolina based mandolin player, singer, and multi-instrumentalist. He plays in a trio with Alice Gerrard & Tatiana Hargreaves, among other groups, and his playing and singing can be heard all over Bella White’s album “Just Like Leaving” on Rounder Records.
Here's a word from Reed about this video, "The tune is “Laurel Mountain Breakdown,” which comes from the Ohio fiddler Cecil Plum. It was fun exploring how this fiddle breakdown could lay out on the mandolin, and I made some minor changes that felt mandolin-suitable. Some Monroe influence to those variations. Cecil grew up in Tunnelton, West Virginia and later lived in Northeast Ohio and played a really cool fiddle style. He wrote this tune. The mandolin is a 1927 Gibson F5 I bought from CJ Lewandowski just two months ago. I’m still getting to know the instrument and really enjoying it so far. It’s already changed how I play, and I’m finding it has a lot to teach me if I listen."
