Mandolin Mondays #316 w/ Special Guest Diptanshu Roy

Rate this Entry
This week on Mandolin Mondays we're joined by mandolinist extraordinaire "Dolinman" Diptanshu Roy all the way from India! Check out his bluegrass inspired rendition of this Bengali folk tune "Chol Mini Assam Jabo" played on his 2004 Gibson A9.

Diptanshu Roy, aka Dolinman is perhaps the first Bluegrass mandolin player from India, and his renditions of Bengali folk melodies highlight unlikely parallels between the folk traditions of Bengal and Appalachia. He also plays European and other Indian folk styles on the mandolin. He has collaborated with several folk artists and is well acclaimed for his incredible musicianship.

He has played in many popular film scores including Piku, Nirbaak, The Bongs Again, Neellohit, Praktan and Pariah Dog. Diptanshu has a great fan following for his outstanding musicality. He is the founder of Folkpick, a VBLOG archiving folk styles of India. He is the cofounder of Fiddler's Green, NSA, Bemanan, & Two Macha.

Here's a word from Diptanshu about this video, "‘Chol Mini Assam Jabo’ is a song based on traditional working class melodies from the tea gardens of Northern Bengal. I find varied subtle connections between this folk melody and an American fiddle tune called Squirrel Hunters. I have rearranged Chol Mini to include elements of the fiddle tune. Enjoy!"

David

Wonderful! I love hearing regional folk music applied to non-regional instruments. Love the vocal, too! A rare treat on MM! And I hear hints of Squirrel Hunters!
    Peace, Todd

Excellent! And I love the added sound of the percussive instrument on his ankle.
