Back on Mandolin Mondays this week we have none other than the inimitable John Reischman with us playing a version of the old time tune "Liza Jane" on his 2009 Gilchrist A Model 1 with cross tuning.
John Reischman needs no introduction here. Over the years, his playing has become gold standard for mandolin tone and taste, and his work with Tony Rice, The Good Ol' Persons, The Jaybirds, as well as his many notable solo recordings have continued to sit in the sweet spot between the worlds of tradition and progression.
Since last time on Mandolin Mondays, John has released a fantastic new album entitled New Time & Old Acoustic, which features an outstanding cast of musicians and a compelling batch of original instrumental tunes. Be sure to check it out here: https://johnreischman1.bandcamp.com/...e-old-acoustic
And be sure to check out John's lesson on this tune, and other old time mandolin lessons over on John's Peghead Nation page here: https://pegheadnation.com/string-sch...-time-mandolin
Here's a word from John about this video, "I learned this version of Liza Jane from a recording by Old-time musician Rafe Stefanini. It was on his County Records release: Hell and Scissors. I recorded a bluegrass/Old-time version with the Jaybirds on our CD: The Road West. For this Mandolin Mondays version, I chose to tune my Gilchrist Model 1 to AEAE. Since the G and D strings are tuned up in pitch, I used light gauge strings so to not to put too much pressure on the top. I’m using my new John Reischman signature Apollo pick. Watch for a lesson on Liza Jane in my Old-Time Mandolin lesson with Peghead Nation."
