This week on Mandolin Mondays we're joined by Virginia multi-instrumentalist Andrew Small of Watkins and Small playing this burning original tune called "Bent Mountain Blues" on his 2014 model A built by Hugh Hansen.

Andrew Small is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and composer who makes his home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia. Holding a master's degree in music performance from Yale University, Andrew has also completed a Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship with master fiddler and National Heritage Award-recipient Eddie Bond and he served as the inaugural Artist-In-Residence for the Crooked Road - Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. He performs with Bill and the Belles as the house band for the PBS television show Farm and Fun Time and has also toured with artists including Sierra Hull, Mandolin Orange, and the North Carolina Symphony. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Andrew has won numerous awards for his fiddling, banjo playing, and folk singing, as well as the 2015 Australian Bluegrass Mandolin Championship, and first prize bluegrass song in the 29th Annual MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Contest. His original music has been featured on radio, podcast, film, and television, including the soundtrack for the PBS documentary film Rock Castle Home. Andrew tours and performs as a duo with Ashlee Watkins, recently releasing their debut album, Dear Companion. Andrew and Ashlee also lead the old-time/bluegrass string band The Alum Ridge Boys & Ashlee, winners of the old time band contest at the 85th Annual Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention. Andrew is also a member of the teaching faculty in the Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Program at East Tennessee State University.
