This week on Mandolin Mondays, we’re joined by Italian mandolinist Stefano Boldrin playing some beautiful Celtic interpretations of some Italian folks tunes on his Jimmy Moon mandolin.
Here’s a word from Stefano about his music and this video, “I live in Veneto and I play traditional folk music from Irish to Old Time, to North-Italian trad. Among my musical inspiration there are trad musician like Andy Irvine, Tim O'Brien, the Bothy Band (and many, many more between Europe and USA), the great Italian musicians from Belluno Andrea da Cortá and Toni Vago from the band Al Tei.
I play a very basic Jimmy Moon mandolin, with Calace strings The "Pairis" is a traditional 4/4 dance tune from Lamon, in the mountain province of Belluno. The tune called "I Calderai" is one of my favourite tune. It's a 6/8 tune that I learned from the great Italian trad band "La Piva dal Carner". On the A part, they sing a sort of chorus that says: "Siamo poveri calderai e veniamo dall'oriente/siamo poveri calderai e veniamo da lontan". Calderai is the italian word for tinker.”
