Mandolin Mondays #422 w/ Special Guest Jesse Appelman

Rating: 1 votes, 5.00 average.
This week on Mandolin Mondays we're joined by California mandolinist Jesse Appelman and his 2007 Nugget A5 for a moving rendition of the Hank Williams classic "Cold, Cold Heart."

Oakland, CA-based mandolinist Jesse Appelman began learning bluegrass mandolin at age 12. He is an in-demand sideman in the Northern California bluegrass scene, and co-founded the Lonely Bird Band with guitarist Scott Nygaard and violinist Alisa Rose.

Jesse is also one of a select few North American mandolinists deeply versed in the Brazilian choro mandolin tradition. Living in Rio de Janeiro in 2008, he studied at the legendary Escola Portatil choro academy and took lessons with Rio’s master musicians. He has brought Brazilian music to stages all around California for over a decade as a member of Grupo Falso Baiano, and in New York City as a member of Regional de NY from 2011-2013.

Jesse has collaborated on stage or in the studio with artists including Mike Marshall, Anat Cohen, the Brothers Comatose, T Sisters, and Danilo Brito. As a teacher, Jesse has worked with students at Walker Creek Music Camp, the Mandolin Symposium, California Brazil Camp, and currently teaches private lessons at Manning Music in Berkeley, CA.

Yowza. Beautiful playing and song selection. My fav Monday session in recent memory. When I consider exactly how I want a mandolin to sound...Jesse and that Nugget pretty much nail it.
