What Bach or 'classical' pieces do you recommend for an intermediate player? It's not so much my chops that suck but rather my sight reading (I will NOT resort to tabs).
What level are Butch Baldassari's output?

I, too, am an intermediate player and I recently started to learn to read music. I would recommend two pieces I've been playing recently. The first is a mandolin transcription of the Bouree from Bach cello suite #3 which is available as a TablEdit file from the Mandozine site by searching Bouree (http://www.mandozine.com/music/tabledit_search.php). It has both tab and notation but you can change the settings so it only shows the notation. Later I found a violin transcription of the same piece (I like it much better than the TablEdit version) on a fantastic site that has an extensive collection of free printable sheet music of Bach with lots of violin transcriptions that are useful for mandolin (http://icking-music-archive.org/ByComposer/J.S.Bach.php). That site alone could keep you busy for a while. I also recently got the Mike Marshall/Chris Thile "Music from Into the Cauldron" book and have been playing their transcription of Bach's Goldberg Variation #1. Both pieces should be technically straightforward for an intermediate player- but challenging enough to keep things interesting. Mike Marshall also has a collection of Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin that has both standard notation and tablature (though I find the tabs a bit distracting if you're trying to learn to read notation). The sonatas and partitas range from intermediate to advanced.

    Hope this helps.
