A simple seasonal waltz, written by David Richardson of the Boys Of The Lough and first recorded on their album "The Day Dawn" in 1994. Played on a single cone resonator tenor guitar, tuned GDAE. I learned the tune from the TablEdit file at Mandozine (they call it "A Midwinter's Waltz"): Link There is also a somewhat less detailed ABC at Nigel Gatherer's site: X:419 T:Midwinter Waltz, A C:Dave Richardson D:Boys of the Lough, The Day Dawn Z:Nigel Gatherer M:3/4 L:1/8 K:G GA | B3 c d2 | d3 B A2 | A3 B A2 | G4 EG | A3 B A2 | A3 B A2 | G3 ABc | A4 GA | B3 c d2 | d3 B A2 | A3 B A2 | G4 EG | A3 B A2 | A3 B A2 | G3 A G2 | G4 :| AB | c3 B c2 | c3 B c2 | e3 d e2 | A3 B c2 | d3 e d2 | B3 A G2 | A3 B G2 | A4 1AB | c3 B c2 | c3 B c2 | e3 d e2 | A3 B c2 | d3 e d2 | B3 A G2 | A3 B A2 | G4 :| 2GA | B3 c d2 | d3 B A2 | A3 B A2 | G4 EG | A3 B A2 | A3 B A2 | G3 A G2 | G4 |] Another ABC at The Session (much the same): X: 1 T: Midwinter M: 3/4 L: 1/8 R: waltz K: Gmaj GA|:B3cd2 | d3BA2 | A3BA2 |G4G2 | A3BA2 | A3BA2 | G3ABc | A4GA | B3cd2 | d3BA2 | A3BA2 | G4G2 | A3BA2 | A3BA2 | G3AG2 |G4z2 :| |:c3Bc2 | c3Bc2 | e3de2 | A3 ABc | d3 ed2 |B3 AG2 | A3BG2 | A4AB | c3Bc2 | c3Bc2 | e3de2 | A3 ABc | d3 ed2 | B3 AG2 | A3 BA2 | G4 z2:|
Here is an update on this very old video of mine from 2010 -- for reasons unclear to me that one was for a long time my most popular Youtube video and is still in the top-20 with around 10k views to date, despite being rather bare bones. My new recording is based on a four-part setting by Nigel Gatherer, played on octave mandolin (lead), 10-string mandolin (high harmony), mandocello (low harmony) and tenor guitar (arpeggio accompaniment): https://www.nigelgatherer.com/tunes/...idwW/MidwW.pdf https://www.nigelgatherer.com/tunes/...dwW/MidwWc.pdf Mid-Missouri M-111 octave mandolin 1920s 10-string waldzither (CGDAE tuning, combined mandolin/mandola) Suzuki MC-815 mandocello Vintage Viaten tenor guitar https://youtu.be/wyTJdmKJsPc Martin
The three-part-harmony version sounds a lot better than the solo version, but I doubt it will become that popular. A few years back it was easier to get lots of views, at least in my experience. Nonetheless, I also recorded this nice tune, this time with bowlback and classical guitar:
I like the harmony you have added CC. It makes the whole song full and enjoyable. I have noticed a drop in views for all of us - but as John told me - we do it because we love music.
Two good sounding interpretations of the song, Martin and Christian.
Christian, that's an awesome recording! You are creating a great atmosphere there.
A lovely tune and a fine arrangement, Martin. Christian, a lovely arrangement and playing, and great pictures too.
