I got "Getting into Jazz Mandolin" on saturday. Before I got the book, I came up with an FFCP exercise that I didn't really see in the book that gave me an "aha!" moment. The book does suggest that you play in different positions, but left it as an exercise for the reader

Start in first position and play the 4th finger FFCP on D on the G-string. Move your hand down and play 3rd finger FFCP on the same root D... then move and play 2nd finger.. and finally move and play 1st finger. This gives you the layout of the key of D for the first 12 frets. For me, this really showed how the 4 fingers overlap and interplay with each other.

I'm just a beginner, so take my posts with a grain of salt.
