Anyone ever try doing some different tunings? Put the mando in GDGD there a few days ago, pretty easy one to mess around with, good fun for just sparking away if you're bored

Some nice drones going on there. I got into cross tuning watching a great local fiddler who turns up for gigs with 2 fiddles, one in sawmill. Fiddles tend to tune up to AEAE but I think it is kinder on the mandolin, in terms of string tension, to tune down to GDGD as you've done. There's a nice trick which allows you to play the same melody an octave lower using the same fingering by moving down 2 strings. I do this on this video on a mandola, originally posted for the song a week group.

Yeah that's really cool, and as you say it provides a very nice drone through the song, I think AEAE would be a bit of a stretch for the strings or have is worked for you?
