This week's winner, Ducks on the Millpond, is a great fiddle tune out of Virginia. You can read some background on it at the Traditional Tune Archive... http://tunearch.org/wiki/Annotation:...n_the_Millpond Most people go to Emmitt Lundy as the source for this tune. You can hear him fiddling it here... http://slippery-hill.com/M-K/GDAE/D/...heMillpond.mp3 To help get the notes down, here's a recording of Matt Brown playing Ducks on the Millpond through slowly... https://www.oldtownschool.org/fiddle...llpond8147.m4a Mandolin tab, sheet music, and a midi can be found here... http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/am...e_millpond.htm I can't seem to find mandolin examples, but here are some good fiddlers to get us started... And here's Ducks on the Millpond with a fun twist. Isn't it kind of interesting to compare the fiddle's drone to the pipes in this one? There's a tune by Kenny Baker called Ducks on the Millpond too. Here's tab for that one... http://www.mandolincafe.com/tab/dotm.txt Here's a video...
So quiet? So, the tab in the link above says A, but the main page of the TuneArch linked above has 3 versions in D. Who's working on what? I like the TuneArch page because it has ABC and I can suck it into Tabledit... http://tunearch.org/wiki/Ducks_on_the_Millpond Here's one of three from that page - X:2 T:Ducks on the Millpond M:2/4 L:1/8 S:Luther Davis (Galax) K:D (f/a/a/)(b/ a)f/a/|a/b/a/f/ e/(d/d)|(f/a)(a/ f)d/B/|A/d/B/d/ e/(d/d)| (f/a/a/)(b/ a)f/a/|a/b/a/f/ ed|f/(a/a/)a/ fd/d/|A/B/B/d/ e/(d/d)|| dd f/f/e/f/|d/e/f/f/ e/(d/B/)d/|dd/d/ f/f/e/d/|B/A/B/d/ e/(d/d)|| dd f/f/e/(d/|d)f/f/ e/(d/B/d/)|dd f/f/e/(d/|B/A/)B/d/ e/(d/d|| anyone?
The one I started working on is in D, Dan. I went with Emmitt Lundy's version in the sound clip above. Here's a solo run-through from me. This one is another new favorite of mine.
Well done Marcy!
That came out GREAT! Thanks.
Work in progress.
Great picking at this kitchen recording! Thanks, Mike. Sounds like Monroe stile to my ears.
Very sophisticated sounding ducks Mike! I love this tune, it was actually the first one I ever learned on the banjo. Thanks for the reminder.
Here's an updated version. Still a work in progress. The transcript I was using didn't have the A section right, and I was missing stuff in the B and C section. However, still a work in progress. This is a tricky one.
Well played, Mike! Does anyone know what happened to Marcelyn? She used to be so active here.
