Hi again members of this group. I also wish to welcome all new members. Apologies for those who waited a while for moderation to join this group. It has been a whirlwind week, I was intverviewed by the press three times, gave an art exhibition and played in three mini mandolin concerts during our national arts festival. All this while continuing or trying to continue a normal day's work.
Now the reason for this post:

I recently played mandolin and guitar mini concerts. That was problem free, and it was easy to hear my guitar playing friend despite a rowdy and dancing crowd. However, then the mandolin and marimbas formed a rather unique combination. Firstly, it became tricky to hear what the mandolin is doing, despite being amped up. Marimbas are very loud.

In this case perfect pitch and knowing the chords well was important.

I guess what I am saying is knowing the instrument, that is the fret board well and of course the melody and chords is even more important than just hearing and listening.
