Marcy, Jeff & I take turns picking songs for us to learn. What Does The Deep Sea Say (also know as: Where Is My Sailor Boy) is a song I've always loved. Marcy sang harmony and played her harmonica, while Jeff picked his 5 string banjo. I played guitar and sang lead while picking out the lead on my mandolin which I overdubbed...I know it from the playing of the Monroe Brothers and also Doc Watson, Fred Price & Clint Howard.
Really great stuff, Marcy, Jeff and Michael. I have heard a lot of bands recently that would play second fiddle to you
Thanks so much, Manfred. That's really fun to hear. And what a cool video, Michael--such wonderful pictures.
I've heard that tune before, you made a very nice version here. My compliments
Thanks, Hendrik. I'd never heard this one before, but it's definitely a favorite tune now.
Well up to your usual standard, you lot! Great playing, singing and visual backing. It's easy to forget that you never actually meet up to play as you sound so totally together!
Excellent! Love the productions by the three of you.
Aha! It has begun. A new season of the Cafe's favourite series has started. Will they get to meet this time? Or will they remain lost in virtual space forever? We'll stay tuned!
Love it. I like this uptempo take much better than the typical. Fine job by Marcy and Michael on the vocals.
my kind of music, lifted the spirits on a deary Belfast Monday morning, thank you
I've always been amazed at the contrast between the spirited, beautiful melodies and the dark, depressing lyrics of so many old time songs in the American tradition. This one talks of lost love, death and the pain of uncertainty – yet the melody is uptempo and fun to listen to. Thanks. What Does The Deep Sea Say? Oh, where is my sailor boy? Where is my sailor boy? He sleeps at the bottom of the deep blue sea And he can't come back to me I stand on the beach alone And gaze at the misty blue Deep sea, as you hold him to your breast Does he mention my name to you? CHORUS: Oh, what does the deep sea say? What does the deep sea say? It moans, it groans, it splashes and it foams And it rolls on its weary way Oh, please tell me, deep blue sea Is he sleeping peacefully? The winds from the north are blowin' icy cold Can you keep him warm for me? If only my grieving soul Some token of love could find And if only the waves would show me where he sleeps Then I'd leave this world behind Chorus A beautiful rose, one day I placed on the crest of a wave I said, "Take it please and let it settle home Above his watery grave" The driftwood I watched in vain And my rose never came back again Oh, waves, take another message to my love Sayin' I'll meet him above. Chorus
