Calon Lân (John Hughes, 1872–1914) Arranged by Jan Wolters, from: http://www.janwolters.nl/blad/calonlan.pdf I've already posted this recording in the Celtic/Folk section, but it should go here as well -- an iconic Welsh hymn, also the song of the Welsh rugby union national team. Some Welsh castles to go with it on the video slide show. This arrangement is by Jan Wolters for a trio of flute, guitar and bass and adapted by me for mandolin, tenor guitar and mandocello. The tune is really nice to play on mandolin! Mid-Missouri M-0W Ozark tenor guitar Suzuki MC-815 mandocello Martin
Martin, great tune. That's going onto my 'learn this' list for fiddle. Thanks
Another remake of an old video, this time played on octave mandolin, mandocello and tenor guitar, from a setting by Nigel Gatherer: https://www.nigelgatherer.com/tunes/...alon/Calon.pdf The fifth and final video I recorded last weekend, all without an actual mandolin anywhere in the arrangements. The Wales football fans have been singing this in Qatar this week... Mid-Missouri M-111 octave mandolin Vintage Viaten tenor guitar Suzuki MC-815 mandocello https://youtu.be/GhVsn_Ei1s0 Martin
Nicely played, Martin. I like the second arrangemennt better than the first one. Thats why I also tried it:
Nicely played by both of you, what a lovely melody.
Thanks, Ginny and Christian. Living in Wales, this tune is part of the fabric of life around here, popping up quite frequently. Christian -- sounds very nice on your mandolin! Yes, Nigel's arrangement is more appropriate for our instruments than the Jan Wolters arrangement I recorded back in 2015, and has a more interesting harmony line. Martin
Fine tune, Martin and Christian. I too prefer the simpler arrangement and that bass line in yours is really good, Christian. If only the rugby team could have had better results in the recent Autumn Tests! Yes, as a Scot I am skating on thin ice discussing recent rugby results, and at least the Welsh National team is taking part in the soccer World Cup right now.
A nice melody. Three times well recorded. But I too like the recently recorded arrangement a little more.
