Tuning machine slippage

    Hi,

I have a ~2 1/2 year old Eastman MD515. In general, I've been really happy with it. But recently it's been having a hard time staying in tune - I find myself needing to retune every few minutes. The string could have gone sharp or flat, but going flat is more common.

It seems to be related to some slipping in the tuning machines; I notice that rather than turning with a constant amount of resistance, they instead turn almost freely for just a bit before meeting resistance. I wonder if this is a problem that others have encountered, and if so, if there is a solution other than buying new tuning machines.

When I tune for the first time after sitting down to play, I typically flatten the note and then tune up in pitch, which is the practice that's been recommended to me.

    Thanks!

    Bruce

Turns out that I had a screw loose - probably still do, too :-)

Does anyone make upgraded tuning machines for the Eastman mandolins that do not require drilling of the headstock or other modifications?
