May not pure blues, but close.
Here is a gig on April 6th, 2010 in Lahti, Finland with Brian Kramer. We are doing Special Agent, by Sleepy John Estes. The lick I used is derived from some of the Son Bonds guitar playing on the original 1938 recording. thanks to René for helping me embed the videos now!!! Cheers BERT
Hey Bert , that´s fantastic ! Looks like your National has a built in pickup and control knobs. Pretty cool sounding. Would love to see/hear more of that gig. Cheers,René
the classic Divin Duck Blues
AAAAAARRRGGHHH just found this one man nobody does it like Ry Cooder
you can spend hours and hours with youtube and keep finding cool stuff I like this one :
This is one of my favorites. John Paul Jones does a wonderful job with this intstrumental version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLU08nOtUkc
lord have mercy ... these kids do it again
another blues mandolin player from Sweden
these folks are really cool
so if you still want to continue watching check this one
this new video of Rich was uploaded only a few days ago did I already mention that Rich is the man ?
youtube youtube youtube such a great resource for music
Did not see this one listed so here goes - Johnny Winter! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKGLzm41Xzk
One of my all-time favorites - Martin, Bogan & Armstrong jamming with Jethro Burns. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVz-umy8QI0
here is a demonstration of the riff I use for Special Agent. By the way, the mandolin on the video here and at the Finland gig video is tuned down one and a half steps. So from low to high... E B F# C#. Good for singing in E and playing in G position. Since I sing in E, A, B, and F# most of the time, it is a cinch to play the mandolin in G, C, D, and A positions, respectively. sorry put this in the wrong place..will move it over... but don't know how to delete here BERT
check out this video with great blues mandolin playing by Robert Crumb :
Bluesmandolinman: You done dug up some good'uns! Bart
check this video of some great oldtime country blues played by mandolincafe´s "samjessin"
Time for some more mandola blues:
Sarah Jarosz - Deep River Blues
Thanks to all the posters for all the wonderful videos! This discussion is THE single best thing on the Cafe!
Here's another great blues tune (a Robert Johnson number, no less) performed by The Artifacts...
A great Old Country Blues number from Michael Pastucha, recently posted to the Cafe's Song-A-Week social group...
thanks Ed for posting these !
Awesome!
cool- thanks for submitting
Here is a live video from a festival in Lithuania in the beginning of July. SEEMS LIKE A DREAM, by Yank Rachell. He did it on guitar, but I made up some mandolin riffs to go with it.
That Cactus Blues is fantastic. Reminds me a lot of the great Rory Gallagher! Bert, what a wonderful version of Seems Like a Dream! Great stuff - Thanks for posting. Here is a sweet cover version of Jimmy Reed's Big Boss Man (written by Luther Dixon & Al Smith) featuring Cafe regular Don Grieser on mandolin (and taking all the solos!) And here's Don again on Come back Baby, (a slow blues jam written and recorded by Walter Davis in 1940 & made famous by Ray Charles). Great stuff!
Love Come Back Baby! I recorded it for my new album which will be out in a couple of weeks. BERT
Here is my version of the great song KID MAN BLUES from the Carl Martin repertoire. Done last week at a blues festival in Sweden. cheers Bert
That sounds great, Bert. Please let us know when your CD is available on I-tunes.
Thanks Bert...you are the man!
Here's a couple from Eden & John's East River String Band (featuring Robert Crumb with some tasty mandolin licks!) Crumb's mandolin is way up in the mix in this series of videos from the band...Great stuff!
Here's some fantastic mandolin-driven Blues from Cafe member Big Rig! https://www.reverbnation.com/spearmanbrewers Everything here is excellent, but I particularly like "Too Long, Too Long". Great stuff! Enjoy.
A short clip, not complete, of As the Crow Flies, when Eric Sardinas asked me to come up and jam with him on it in front of 3000 screaming fans in Lithuania. Fun, and not my usual audience either!
Rich DelGrosso & Don Stiernberg performing together in April of 2010. Magnificent!
You come up with some good links Ed. Keep it up. I especially enjoyed the DelGrosso/Steinberg collaboration. It's funny, that camera angle makes Rich look like a NFL lineman. I wouldn't want to mess with him!
Anybody know what kind of mandolin Don Stiernberg is using? Sounds great. Seen this clip before, I think it is from some course they were teaching at? Great stuff.
Hi Bert; I believe Don is playing his 1996 Nugget asymmetric 2-Point in the video. Here is an old Cafe thread about that mandolin. Also, there is a nice photo of Don with this mandolin in his Cafe interview.
Brilliant! Wonderful solo slide resonator mandolin from Sam Bush!
More from Sam Bush. This time doin' some Robert Johnson. Pretty amazing...
Sam showcases his incredible rhythm chops on that RJ tune. Great stuff!
Absolutely fantastic stuff from Cafe member Marc Woodward. This is golden!
More great Blues mandolin from Marc Woodward!:
Ed that was so good, thanks. I hope Marc Woodward puts all this great material on a new CD soon.
Thanks for posting, Ed !!
What version is it? Does any one know? I see there are so many versions of that song.
