How about Woody's Rag. Great tune for beginners, intermediates, and advanced mandolin pickers!
"Star of the County Down" doesn't appear to have been done. I'm planning on starting that one today since I may start playing a bit with a very loose "band" doing some English and Irish folk tunes. It will be an interesting change for someone who's only ever played bluegrass. I'd love to hear how some other folks do this one of the mandolin.
I was looking and I couldn't find "Chicken Reel", how about that one for the Song of the Week?
alex , star of county down is in there somewhere
To add some baroque to the mix: Gaspar Sanz's Rujero should work fine on mandolin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMK_ivU8tak
How about a nice three part hornpipe - The Belfast Hornpipe (AKA The Sweeps Hornpipe)
Bluegrass Special
Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. Santa is coming to town. The First Noel
How about 'Oh Mandolin': http://youtu.be/HfYd7FkSiBE http://youtu.be/9GR--4BQcFs
The Bourrée in e minor by Bach made famous by Jethro Tull, or the one by de Visée in d-minor.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B66bjFbj2Mg
Slocum Hollow from Butch Baldassari is a very nice one. I made a recording yesterday... www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NdlKYWicv0
"The Jack Rabbit Trail" from Butch Baldassari is another good one. On the video you see some dutch musician playing the tune. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnHMF3hmDiI
Fred Digs Up A Hornet's Nest? http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/sh...on-an-original
How about "Besame mucho"? There's a great version on Tone Poems 2 with lots of improvisation, but the simple melody played tremolo is also nice
I would suggest "Crazy Creek" Here's a video from the magnificient Roger Berggren, most versions are on fiddle. The difficult to find chords are ||A-D-|A-D-|A---|C---|C---|C---|C---|E---|E---|A---:|| | F---|F---|C---|C---|F---|F---|C---|E---|
And of course I would love to see Chris Romaine's "Nancy's Waltz" as the song of the week. I posted my version somewhere on the forum. 21-12-2014
"Down In The Swamp," an instrumental composition by Béla Fleck. It's a great AABB fiddle/mandolin/anything tune in E. Original version: Chris Thile/Hilary Hahn:
Another typical mandolinwaltz. The "Azalea Waltz", I cannot believe it's still not in the list! I don't know it's origin, but it's in the fiddletunebook and on cd's from Butch Baldassari
It's funny, I watched this video very recently, and I had seen Sierra and Justin play this at a mandolin festival in France in October, where she made kind of the same speech about this being the first tune to make her almost cry while playing it, etc.
With our little acoustic trio "Kitchen Kings", we decided to cover "Hey Joe". Today I set down and tried to play it on my mando. I thought it could work as well for SAW, so I recorded a demo. It needs to be fine tuned, but the song seems to go well with the mando. My suggestion: Hey Joe as played by Jimi Hendrix
Have we ever had "Panhandle Country" as a song of the week?
Though originally a vocal song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJPxtC_QM90 "Kitty of Coleraine" works as an instrumental jig as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4dCTdFgtRA
The Wonder Hornpipe
"Home sweet Home" is a nice tune to practice crosspicking, but playing the melody should do the trick as well.
How about a couple of Irish Jigs The Blarney Pilgrim and Jimmy Ward's
how about mylecharaines march by a Manx group called Barrule:
This is a GREAT tune! We should do it soon.
It doesn't look like "Bully of the Town" has been done yet. That would be a fun one!
Has "Old Grimes" ever been selected?
Has the Wedding Tarantella already been played? Nice "Jig" from Italy
Two more suggestions: 1) Fitting to the season: Mozart's may song "longing for spring" works quite well as a jig when played a little faster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7wOYreZvSw 2)Midnight in Moscow: lends itself to some jazzy phrasing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAm20ljbKGE
Careless Love works as BG as well as a jazz tune
Some more suggestions: Keep on the sunny Side, If Banjo Ben manages to play this Carter family song, we will surely also be able to do so Mississippi Sawyer, nice Old Time tune Joys of Wedlock, lesser known but nonetheless nice jig And what about Go down Moses? Should work fine on the mando. OK, guess that's enough from me.
one more suggestion: Zito the bubbleman.
Kitty of Coleraine is a beatiful Irish Jig that probably started out as a vocal song about spilled milk but works equally well as an instrumental jig
Though the title may be a bit disturbing, "Booth shot Lincoln" is a nice OT tune, most often played on clawhammer banjo and fiddle, but also on mandolin
Another fiddle tune with a historical background: "Year of Jubilo"

Samolynn waltz - from Mark Schatz is a wonderful tune.. it's on his cd - "Brand New Old Tyme way" I can't find a good example, but there's a wonderful version played by mandolinplayer Jan Pals from the dutch band "Lazy Tater" .
I'm hereby suggesting Sportsman's Hornpipe. Don't know if it's been suggested before.
One Little Story The Crow Told Me – OT Otto Wood – OT Walk Right In (And Set Right Down) – Jugband Blues
Cabin in Caroline - BG
In addition to my suggestion "Samolynn waltz" earlier, I made a recording yesterday.
Crawdad Song (Hole) - BG I'll Fly Away -BG/Gospel
Jerusalem Ridge - BG, Monroe
another idea - Music for a found harmonium:
I am reposting the above list of poll tune suggestions, with all the ones taken out that have either been voted in, or in the poll for a month, and dropped due to lack of interest! You'll see my list is getting pretty small! I'd love for some new suggestions! Before you suggest tunes, I'd appreciate it if you'd do a quick search to see if they have been covered here in the Social Group; you can do that by going to the 'advanced search' box in the upper right corner, and searching the group posts for the tune/song. Also, I'd appreciate it if you included the genre of the tune, along with the name! Bully of the Town (350) Careless Love Done With Bonaparte (346, 347, 348,349)xxx I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground (343, 344) chosen Keep on the Sunny Side (346) chosen Knockbauer Polka #1 IT Knockbauer Polka #2 IT Midnight in Moscow (already chosen) Music for a found harmonium (340, 341) chosen Muttering Woman (341, 342, 343) xxxx Old French (349, 350) (which goes well with the Snowflake Reel) Saltspring ~ BG (342) chosen Salmon tails up the water (IT/Scottish) (350) Santa is Coming to Town (347, 348) xxxx The Boys of Ballycastle (IT) (341, 342, 343) xxx The Earl's Chair/IT The Green Groves of Erin (reel) - IT (349, 350) The Humours of Ballyconnell (reel) (344, 345, 346, 347) chosen The Humours of Trim (Sea Image, The Rolling Wave) ~ IT "The Jack Rabbit Trail" from Butch Baldassari (341, 342, 343) chosen Untitled Mazurka (346, 347, 348)xxxx Willafjord goes well with Spootiskerry (Shetland Reels) Windmills ~ Scottish folksong (348, 349)chosen These are OT tunes: Booth Shot Lincoln (349, 350) Chicken and Dumplings OT (Simple tune to experiment with AEAE or GDGD tuning) Crow Creek (Simple tune to experiment with AEAE or GDGD tuning) One Little Story The Crow Told Me – OT Otto Wood – OT (343, 344) chosen Tom & Jerry (347, 348) chosen Tugboat (339, 340, 341, 342)xxx Walking in Jerusalem Just Like John OT/BG Wild John (344, 345, 346) xx
Saltspring is a lovely bluegrass-fiddletune typical for mandolin. Here it's played by John Reischman and the jaybirds. The tune is not too difficult and there's a nice free backingtrack on http://www.fbbts.com/ . I found out it's in the Other Tunes list, but I really think we should give it a try and vote for it...
Saltspring would defo get my vote how about 'Done with Bonaparte' there's a cool version with Mark Knopfler and Emmylou H. with an Octave mando lead: Also the Joe Walsh version of I wish i was a mole in the ground:
Windmills written by Alan Bell is a nice Scottisch Folksong that could be a nice slow instrumental waltz in C for the mandolin. Here's the version from my heroes The McCalmans
