Thanks, David..... could you do me a HUGE favor, and add the genre (if you know it)? I try to have the polls populated with a good variety of genre....
March 23, 2018: I'm cleaning up this list again, taking out the tunes chosen, and the tunes voted on and never chosen. You'll note the list is getting short again (maybe we've considered every tune out there haha!) If you have a suggestion, please post it here, or send me a private message, and I'll get it on this list) I'd appreciate it, if you could do a search (by choosing "advanced search" at the top right of every page, then select 'group messages' and then the title of the tune in the search box). If you find that the tune has ever been tune of the week, please don't submit it again. If you find it's been submitted as an 'other tune', or even if it's been voted on but never selected, it's fine to suggest it again! As always, I appreciate your including the genre along with the suggestion! I'm cleaning up this list again, and again, it's getting thin! I depend on you all to help me keep this list populated! It's OK to suggest tunes that are already here as 'other tunes', but I'd appreciate it, if when you send me your suggestions, you do a quick check of our 'official tunes' to make sure we don't have a duplicate! You can make the suggestions here in this discussion, or you can send them to me in a private message! It also helps me if you can include the genre along with the title. I sure could use some suggestions for some other genre besides Irish (and related, like Scottish, etc). Our list has no bluegrass, and only one Old Time tune left on it!
Here is a french Canadian tune titled "Sarah's mandolin" (Cape Breton) and here is a link to a posting on You Tube:
"Field Mice" (recently composed by Chip Bach), a fiddle tune, old time I think
The Noranda Mineworkers reel - Canadian bluegrass/oldtime fiddletune [/url]
Grey Owl - old-time fiddle tune
I have no intention to involve politics on this forum, it's just a cool tune! Obama's march to the Whitehouse - Old time tune
May I make a suggestion about procedure? Luurtie has added links to YouTube videos to his tune suggestions, which I consider to be good practice. Sometimes it's even essential because there are different tunes that share the same name, or conversely tunes that are known under different names. To ensure that the tune ending up in the poll is the one that the proposer wanted, I think it should be required for the proposer to link to a video or sound example, as Luurtie and Robert have done on this page. As a related point, I have noticed that you usually ask the proposers to add such a link in the poll thread, which rarely seems to happen. This is unfortunate because these links would be extremely helpful in getting to know the poll tunes and thereby encourage participation. Why would I vote in a poll where I know none of the tunes and would have to do some serious Googling to find good examples? Asking proposers to provide such a link at the point where the suggestion is made would eliminate this issue. Since you seem to post quite often while on the road, it may be difficult for you to find these links and put them in the polls. But if the links are there in the suggestions thread, you may be able to find some assistants who can do that for you. I'd be happy to help. Unfortunately I don't have any suitable tunes to suggest right now. Most of what I play is from Ireland and the British countries, and that category is already over-represented in the list.
How About "Hut On Staffen Island" Sorry Barbara I forgot to say this is a hornpipe. The notation is on The Session here: https://thesession.org/tunes/2067

Farewell to Trion, a lovely OT tune:
The Grand Picnic - OT Tune
How about a Klezmer tune? This is "Forest Wedding" from the Portland Collection books. here is the Portland Megaband playing it:
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll add them to the list. Gelsenbury, good points, and if the new tunes suggestions, from now on, include a link, I'll try to include it. I had been trying to find links myself, to what tune I thought was meant (since so many tunes are public domain tunes), but over the last few months, I'd been unable to do that from my mobile device, and asked for help. I will go back to trying to do that, if I am able!

Barbara, It looks like The Grand Picnic - OT Tune came off the list. I assume it is because it was already an 'Official Tune'. I do a search on the tunes on your list and didn't find it so is there some other place to look also or perhaps a better method than using control F to search. I want to be able to add tunes you don't have to check on so any help is appreciated. Robert Never mind. I just figured it out. There are two lists to check and I think I sometimes checked one sometimes the other. I think I am straight now.....but you never know for sure......
For new tunes I would suggest some of the tunes written by SAW members, I have one printed out by Luurtie (A Rainy Day) and another by David Hansin (Maddie's Pride)
Rainy Day (https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/g...cussionid=6270) and Maddie's Pride (https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/g...cussionid=2864) are great suggestions! I'd also like to suggest the Westphalia Waltz, which was an "Other tune" way back when (https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/g...scussionid=329). And there's also the Quickstep to the Battle of Prague, which I don't think we've done before. This tune was composed by František Kocžwara from Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) in the 18th century and is a popular session tune in England, where the composer lived and worked for some time. Some notes and the musical notation can be found here (http://www.magpielane.co.uk/sleeveno..._of_prague.htm), although the tune is played in G at the sessions I know. David Surette has recorded a brilliant version (https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...-Tuttle-s-Reel), and a nice video (not by David, but with mandolin!) can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47Gv_b3XE4Q Here's the video embedded:
I really like the idea of having more, maybe even a run of, official tunes composed by members. I believe we played at least one of Don Grieser's tunes, Canyon Waltz, as an 'other' and at least one of John Kelly's, The Birdfeeder Waltz. Lots of composing talent in this group. Besides the ones mentioned above, we also have some of Harper's own tunes located here somewhere (sorry, can't remember where 'somewhere' is and I don't know how to link anyway.)
Tunes composed by members would be a great idea. I myself wrote 20 tunes so far, but it's a kind of weird to suggest your own tunes in a poll. If anyone would do a suggestion with one of my tunes, my weblog is luurtieful.blogspot.com
One thing I have wondered about is picking tunes that are published in books from Mel Bay and other music publishers. If music is suggested for those tunes, is it OK to post the PDF's of the music from those books on this site? I don't know if that is a copyright violation.
Yes, to the best of my understanding that would be a copyright violation. This is assuming that you mean PDF versions of pages from the books. You could check whether the music is available on a web site such as The Session or Traditional Music. This works well for traditional tunes. Although the notation printed in the book will belong to the publisher, the tune itself will not. It's different for music that was composed especially for the book or is published in it for the first time. In those cases, you'd probably need the composer's permission to share, unless they have already published it elsewhere - on a personal blog, for example.
I am suggeting Luurtie's "A Fresh Start" as a bluegrass tune. https://youtu.be/2hfWLeBS5J0 The notes are here:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kn6...VOWwSX6UI/view I don't know how to properly put youtube and blog links on here. This is the best I can do.
"Right, Right on" is a very funny playable bluegrasstune written by Bill Monroe I recommend everyone who likes this to listen to this complete album. You can hear that tune there.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO3qmy0YoU0
"The Valiant", English jig by Simon Ritchie Music and ABC notation: http://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=tr...k/Valiant/0000 Video: https://youtu.be/ALm72cyhzqA Embedded below:
Ok, I checked both lists and couldn't find this old time tune on either one so I think this isn't a duplicate. It it titled "Glory In The Meetinghouse".
Birdfeeder Waltz by our own John Kelly -- as a waltz (of course.) https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...rdfeeder+waltz
John's Birdfeeder Waltz was Song of the Week #455.
Thanks... I remember now. My 'search' was not thorough, lol. Three Owls Jig by our own Robert Balch. Since it is a jig is it automatically ITM? I didn't see a genre listed, but then we have proof my searches are not thorough!
What do the xx, xxx, or xxxx next to some tunes mean? I'm not quite understanding the structure of the list.
I also like the tune, Glory In The Meeting House. Here's my favorite version:
Gelsenbury, I work from this list. Those with xx’s have been on the polls, and not chosen. About twice a year, I clean up the list, and take out the tunes that have been on the polls, chosen or not. So, the tunes that have numbers in the parentheses, which indicate the poll they were in, those that then say chosen, or haves xxx’s after them, are for my information, when populating the polls.
Barbara, thank you for the clarification. It's not for me to change the rules, but since you regularly ask for new tune suggestions and have sometimes wondered whether we've "run out" of songs, I don't understand why you'd delete those that haven't been chosen yet. For example, "Roderick MacDonald's Strathspey" seems to have been in the poll only once and is now marked to be removed. Wouldn't it be better to re-insert it into a future poll? The polls often include stiff competition, so I don't think that not winning a poll can be taken as evidence that the group doesn't want to play a tune, ever.
Gelsenbury... usually I do put a tune in 3-4 polls before I “retire” them. Especially if it was close. I took the strathspey off after one poll (probably the first time i’ve done that) because it had zero votes. But, I will put it back on the next one!
Thanks! Also consider "Quickstep to the Battle of Prague", which I suggested not that long ago and would definitely vote for. Not many people take part in those polls, for various reasons. I'm just coming out of a period of several weeks where I had no time to visit the site at all, let alone suggest, vote on, learn, or record songs. The polls are a great way to decide on the song of the week (or fortnight), but they're much less informative about which tunes are unpopular in the group and should be taken off the list.
Teardrop Waltz, a nice Canadian Waltz:
The Rose of Tralee, nice Irish song, that also works on the mandolin Mandotabs: http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/ma..._Of_Tralee.htm
Mazurka des écoliers de Saint Genest by Gilles Chabenat French mazurka ABC and notation available at: https://thesession.org/tunes/7854 Really good example on melodeon here:
Salt Creek (traditional) I'll Fly Away - (hymn/ standard for jam sessions)
La Valse Ollu. Quite simple and repetitive enough to be fun for beginners but it also has this harmony call and response sort of thing going too. The whole tune can be played a third above with variations. Enjoy! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iZDwKH...TrgF_&index=25
The Tombigbee Waltz is a nice Old Time Waltz:
