Drickes (Rhineland tune)

This is the tune to a song from the Lower Rhine (Niederrhein) region of Germany, in a style reminiscent of carnival music from my native City of Cologne, a bit further upriver (all traditional Cologne music is carnival music). The name of the tune is Kölsch as well -- "Drickes" is the Cologne variant of two common German first names, Andreas and Heinrich -- so I suspect those Niederrhein folks have stolen the tune from us.

The City of Cologne prides itself on its distinctive language and culture, and one of its peculiarities is that most of the traditional German first names have their own local variants which sometimes only have a fleeting similarity to the High German equivalents -- my own father (a proud native of Cologne) has called me "Määtes" (the Cologne version of "Martin") all my life. See this page on the Cologne-language version of Wikipedia (yes, there is a Cologne language Wikipedia).

There is even a special Cologne name for the mandolin -- "Flitsch" -- the instrument is used widely in carnival music, and even as a solo instrument by several local standup comedians such as JP Weber and Hans Süper.

I used this online score for my recording:
