I have thousands of vinyl recordings, and thousands more CDs, but it wasn't until music subscription services and YouTube music videos that the whole WORLD of music was opened up to me AND it is just overwhelming. I listen to a few podcasts about music and on one of them the guests are asked at the end of the program what they are listening to this week. And then they tell us about a song they liked. It got me thinking...

Why couldn't the members of this forum do something along those lines? I'd certainly like to check out a song or tune and an artist you found inspiring and worthy of your listening time this week and in the weeks to come. As mandolinists we naturally gravitate towards music with mandolins in it, but not always. So with this in mind here's a video of something I listened to this week...

The tune is Akademipolska played by Erik Rydvall on the nyckelharpa and Olav Mjelva with the hardanger fiddle.

I have a mandolin tune list with about 500 tunes on my YT page that I occasionally go through, improvising away.

Michael - Great idea! Great playing of both instruments…neither of which I was aware off…in the video.

Simon…select one for us that you have been listening to this week…!

As I planned posting a Lord Inchiquin video I’ve been listening to various versions of the tune this last week…or two! However, as I am considering a Johnny Cash tune sometime in the not-to-distant future I’ve dipped into the following: https://youtu.be/gIlbZAP8ASQ and https://youtu.be/7sPc8ahc7iI

As I play a lot with various fiddlers and am especially fond of slow airs, I have been listening to several top fiddlers. Here is a link to Scottish ace Duncan Chisholm playing Night in That Land composed by the late Johnny Cunningham, fiddle-playing brother of top accordion player Phil, whose compositions have featured several times recently in the SAW Group. I find the octave is often my go-to instrument when trying to interpret our great slow airs.

At Ginny's suggestion, here are the links to our versions of the Johnny Cunningham slow air. We recorded a version each rather than a collaboration, John W, as far as I recall.

-trying to figure out the TAB for this tune… I found that some kind soul has posted the notation on Musescore but how to work it out for a couple of humble mandolins?

For whatever reason I don't listen to much if any music for the pure listening pleasure, as I used to. I also have hundreds of LPs, cassettes, CDs, ect., but I'm usually listening to tunes I want to learn, which is for pleasure also I suppose. But this tune is the one I've been trying for years and I'll listen to for pleasure and inspiration. By the great Jacob do Bandolim. His amazing tune O Vôo da mosca. Sadly there are no videos of him playing this tune so for some viewing pleasure also here's a great version by a couple of young guys keeping the spirit alive.

I used to play this Colombian Pasillo when I was a teenager... now it's hard for me, I'm trying to make my fingers remember it...

Some time ago I fell in love with this Norwegian waltz, finally after some work I can play it along with the track...

And well, I discovered this old Andean gem that is a pleasure to listen to...

Wow, so many wonderful players to listen to. Thanks so much. Keep 'em coming...

With that in mind, back in 2007 I wondered if there were any great solo mandolin players who had recorded much. I found Hamilton de Holanda and his 2007 solo album entitled Intimo. Check it out. He was on tour and recorded this album much like we do our efforts (on his laptop). It is certainly well worth listening too! Here is one tune from the album. He plays what is called a bandolim. This one has 10 strings. Apparently Brazil has quite a tradition of solo "mandolin".

Taking the Swing 101 class from Matt Flinner, so I've been listening to a lot of jazz and swing. Playing it is like trying to speak a foreign language. Great music and fun though.

I’ve just returned from a short break in Lisbon, Portugal, where I felt compelled to track down some authentic, live Fado music. I recorded a few songs during an evening I spent in a restaurant with Fado musicians and singers performing…this is one of the songs, accompanied with a few of the many photos I took. The singer is Fernanda Proenca.
