I was in Jamaica when the late great Harry Belafonte recently passed, this song of his was sung around the piano in tribute and I fancied playing it on the mandolin. I found a simple version of the tune on www.traditionalmusic.co.uk. For a change you are spared of view of my midriff. Instead I added in some of my own photographic efforts. You are also spared me singing.
Malcolm, there seems to be no video attached?
Nice suggestion Malk. https://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=t..._Farewell/0000 https://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/f...a_farewell.pdf Those are the lyrics. And the tune's a nice pick direction workout because the rhythm has a lot of upbeats in each melodic phrase of 16 notes: D-DU-U-UDUDU-UDU. D-DU-U-UDUDU-UDU. D-DU-U-UDUDU-UDU. D-D-DU-UD-DU----. Though the tune has a very straight, strong rhythm the last phrases are often played with a lot of rubato.
Here is Malcolm’s video with a nice solo mandolin and his own beautiful photos.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJzWYlqStyg
This is really delightful, Malcolm. I suspect it is deceptively simple. The syncopation in the melody line requires some precision and you have phrased it all very well. And the pictures and video are lovely.
Good Job all round, Malk (mando playing and video/pics). You and Richard (Chakoun video) have certainly stepped out of the Celtic parameters…
sorry I did not realise I'd missed out the video... I had taken down the original on youtube when I immediately noticed on posting, some erroneous text that had been inadvertently left from the previous video. Thought I edited this post by to replace it not just delete the first. oops
Very enjoyable listen, Malcolm. Lovely sound from your mandolin too. Your move to the Caribbean for this one has certainly paid off. Thanks too to Frithjof for posting the video.
You brinng out the rhythm nicely, Malk.
