Here's another beautiful J.S.Skinner tune. It may be in the 19 part, un-alphabetical order "other tunes" list. If that's where these tunes are being found, I'm def not doing that... Thanks for the Listen!!

You are right, Frank. If you have recorded a tune and like to post it for SAW group, there is a great chance that Martin has done it in an arrangement for his mandolin ensemble. Or one of our other fellows here, of course.

Yes, I did record this tune many years ago, but yours is much nicer than mine -- I took the tune a good deal too fast. Well done, Frank, it sounds great! Lovely dogs, too.

As for the "Other Tunes" index, the only way to manage it is by loading the index and hitting CTRL-F to search within the browser page.

I can second Martin's method which I also use and had just found the other recording when I saw Martin had just posted but not to waste what I'd found

I love this song! And I always upvote Skinner. I play it quite a bit faster. The slowness suits the tune quite well. Fantastic job; love the channel.

Lovely dogs, Frank, and lovely playing. You really are the master of the very slow.

Thanks Folks! This is such a beautiful tune that stands so solid on it's own. Really tells a story, whatever it may be... I didn't know it was Skinner until my pre post research, duh. Any more I should know about?

Frank there are several more JSS melodies that would suit you.

When I was thinking of making some recordings, I had "Rosebud of Allenvale" and "Mrs Scott Skinner" in mind.
Alas, thinking has not translated into doing, so I offer them to you.

I think you have covered "The Music O' Spey", but not another in that vein "The Flower O' the Quern"

"Rosebud of Allenvale" was composed for his cousin who was married to the groundskeeper at the cemetery in Allenvale Rd, Aberdeen and where Skinner himself now lies. He wrote and played it in A but I like it in G on the mandolin.

Occasionally I play "Mrs Scott Skinner", a melody I love very much, in sessions here, and a local fiddler, who once knew someone who , as a teenager, had played piano for Scott Skinner, never fails to remind me that according to this source, JSS was not especially kind to his first wife, if that is the Mrs he had in mind

"Rosebud of Allenvale" has two recordings (by Frithjof and me) in an SAW thread from 2021, as the second half of a set with "Wild Rose Of The Mountain":

Great to hear Skinner being played, and your version here is beautifully played, Frank. Aberdeen University has a great online archive of Skinner's work with a wealth of information including original manuscripts available to browse. https://www.abdn.ac.uk/scottskinner/

Bren mentions the recordings by Scottish fiddler Dr Paul Anderson, who is one of the foremost exponents of interpreting Skinner's music. He has a YouTube channel under the name Fingal Cromar with loads of tunes uploaded.

I have always thought (and lived) that playing slow music is more difficult than playing it fast...and you, Frank, are a master of the Adagio

I meant to add this video when I mentioned Paul Anderson playing the tune, so here it is now, played on solo fiddle by Paul.
