A Christmas tune for our second Newbie song?

    Hello everyone,

How about a Christmas tune for our next song?
Here are links to "Away in a Manger" and "I Wonder as I Wander" with notes and tabs from the great site that Ed posted:

Other suggestions are most welcome. Maybe we can do two or three before Christmas to share with our families!

What do the rest of you think?

    P.S.--Gelsenbury, great pictures!

    Hi Karen,

Can you check those links for me? I can't find the page from there. I think "Away in a Manger" is a good idea, I'd like to learn that. Will keep looking for other tunes too.

OOPS! I don't know what happened there! Try this:

This is the other version of "Away in a Manger" (which I actually like better).

    Here's "I Wonder As I Wander":

I also just found "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" which is lovely. I vote for this one (but I'll probably work on all of them):

If you hit the download area below the song, a nice printable version comes up.
You can search for other songs with the alphabet at the top of the page.
If you go to the Home page and scroll down to "Tablature" you can find mando tabs for several different categories of music. The ones above are either from "Common Session Tunes" or "Folk and Traditional Music."

Are some of you other Newbies going to join in? Let us hear what you would like to do!

Well, I'm definitely in, Karen. The links work now, thank you. I've downloaded your preferred version of "Away in a Manger" as well as "O Come Emmanuel". I like "O Come Emmanuel", but I'm not sure how it would work on mandolin. Do you have any suggestions on style?

Another Christmas tune that I'm hoping to learn is this one by Handel:

Maybe there's no need for all of us to work on the same tune? We could have a go at what we like (including "Greensleeves", which I still haven't mastered in Ed's version), and then post sound or video clips to share and get us all in the festive spirit. What do you think?

Sounds good! I'm kind of working on several at once anyway. They are not too hard to play, but perfecting is another matter. Also, I find myself wanting some chords and double stops to spice things up, and I'm not too good at putting that together myself.

Ed, are you out there? Can you help us enhance some of these Christmas tunes?

Yes, I think we can experiment with that! I still haven't even started on these. Well, I've printed them out, which is a start!

My mandolin is feeling neglected after a couple of very busy weeks at work. I'm sure we'll do some bonding over the weekend.

Here's one especially for you, Karen! My music theory is still very poor, so this version of Emmanuel is just the result of some noodling this afternoon. Maybe we can develop it further.

Take the notation you linked, and make the following additions:
In the 3rd bar, add a low B to the long G.
In the 6th bar, add a low G to the long E.
In the 8th bar, play tremolo on the long G.
In the 9th bar, play tremolo on the long D.
In the 10th and into the 11th bar, add a low D to each of the Bs.
In the 12th bar, add a low D to the A and a low B to the G.
In the 13th bar, add a low F# to both Ds and play tremolo.
In the 14th bar, add a low D to both Bs and play tremolo.
In the 15th bar, add a low D to the last B.
In the 16th bar, add a low B to the G, and a low D and G to the B.
In the 17th bar, add a low D to the A.
In the last two bars, turn the last note into a full Em chord.
(I hope I got all that right!)

I'm also learning those other Christmas tunes. Come Christmas time, I'm sure you can never know too many.

Hi all! I'm totally new here and have had just 2 mandolin lessons. (My 1st intrument - I LOVE it!) I like the idea of everyone doing their own tune & sharing. I'll check out the tunes you've linked here! I'm learning "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" as a holiday song and it's pretty easy. Here's where I found the tab & notation: http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/se...ndolin-tab.pdf

Hi KMH! Yes, that's a very nice tune too! I picked it with some friends last Sunday, it was such a good start into Advent. Let's keep practising!

Quiet here! Did you all play lovely Christmassy mandolin tunes over the holidays? I had a decent go at Emmanuel. Unfortunately no recording exists of the solo attempt, but I do have a dictaphone with some simple Christmas songs on it, with my mum on guitar and me on mandolin. I'll see if I can identify one or two pieces that I can post here.

The challenge now, being a newbie: to get back into all the other stuff I was learning before having a tilt at the Christmas tunes and have since neglected!

This is very useful! The social groups don't allow attachments, but the site admin has opened a thread for social group attachments on the main forum, to which we can link from here. I hope this works.

I don't have a recording of the enhanced solo version of Emmanuel, but here's a nice family clip. My mum on guitar, me on poor mandolin, and my little nephew with his contribution right at the end! :D

Dennis, that was a delightful rendition of Emmanuel! Good for you, Mum, and the nephew, too! I also worked it up, using a lot of double stops and a bit of tremolo and played it for the family. That was my only solo. Otherwise we (my sons, uncle, and aunt) strummed some carols for a sing-a-long, and that was fun. I hope to do more next Christmas.
