www.frets.com this isn't specific to building, but gives such great close up and detailed descriptions of some processes that could either be repairs or part of the building process you just have to know about it
Some great sites out there! Here are a few more I found to be helpful: http://www.wiensmandolins.com/building.htm http://audioartillery.com/projects/mandocello?p=0#1 http://rattlesnakemandolins.com/the_build http://lutheriefromscratch.blogspot.com/ http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robert....robert.deacon/
The definitive French Polishing guide: http://milburnguitars.com/fpbannerframes.html CNC router resources: cncrouterparts.com, finelineautomation.com Also, a great all around article from The Man Himself, A. Lawrence Smart. (http://www.smart-instruments.com/gal95.html) One of the most helpful lutherie articles I have ever read. I have read it dozens of times over the past ten years, and I learn something new every time I read it.
Lawrence seems to have moved that article here, if this is the one you meant: http://smart-instruments.com/amluth95.html And I'll add: http://www.theleftyluthier.com/tutorial
Thanks for the updated link, David. I would also add that if you're getting into this stuff, you should definitely join the GAL and read as many of the back issues (or Big Red Books, which are anthologies of the back issues) as you can.
I'll put a second in for the GAL stuff. I found several articles in American Luthiere to be very helpful. Especially the recent article by Andrew Mowry on binding an F5. Good stuff!
