This is the third of the Richard Thompson covers I've recorded this weekend, a song from his first solo album "Henry The Human Fly" in 1972. Also covered by the Albion Country Band and used as part of the music for "The Mysteries" at the National Theatre in London. The main melody makes a nice jig on mandolin. Melody and chord progression from the transcription in the offical "Richard Thompson Songbook: Vol. 1" by Maartin Allcock.

    Mid-Missouri M-0W mandolin
    Vintage Viaten tenor guitar

Nice tune - some unusual chords in the guitar backing.

Thanks! The chords are as per the original Richard Thompson studio recording.

Christian has asked for the sources of my three RT songs this weekend. The original Thompson studio recording from 1972 is here:

However, the best recording of "The New St. George" is probably by the Albion Country Band (a Fairport Convention off-shoot) from their 1973 album "Battle Of The Field". Lead vocals by Martin Carthy and Simon Nicol:

The song also gave its name to a pretty good mid-1990s American folk/rock band.
