Thanks, Simon - sounds lovely on the OM. I like a lot of the dances from the old 72-tune ABC file where that one is from. You probably already the PDF conversion posted here on the Cafe many years ago (link).

I made a recording of this quadriglia more than 10 years ago, starting at 0:40 here:

Should really be played faster -- may try to re-do it.

I’ve got the approx 85 tune version Martin. I copied it from the Italian guy’s site a couple of weeks later. Cant find the link now because my old laptop is down but will try tomorrow. That's if the site is still up and running... I do remember getting a couple of ‘sharing big abc files?!’ raised eye brow comments though!
Hey this is Italian trad. Gotta share it about!

Go for it with a fast version Martin I’d like to hear that. I’ll have another go too.
I myself concentrate a lot (maybe too much) on rhythm and maybe not enough on getting the tempo up. I can get exceedingly relaxed!

Here’s a Giga from the same book, and a little bit more up tempo.
    Divertiti!

I found it’s name! ‘In Tal Bosc’

Very nice, Simon! I stumbled my way through that same giga back in 2010 as well (link), but you definitely have a better tempo in your recording -- I'm sure I could improve on mine now.

Thanks John and Martin, yes the beginning of the B part was a finger twister at first!

Took me quite a while on the metronome to get that playing smoothly, but it was quite a thrill once I got it. A bit like the first time you learn tremolo.

I’ve found that a lot of these Italian tunes are quite simple but each one seems to have a strange turn. Of course I used my special metronome recording to get the hesitation in the rhythm.

Well played, Simon and Martin! Perhaps you should do an Italian collaboration.

I liked the Giga especially, but they're all good.

I like all of them. I'm not used to Italian music, maybe we need more here.

Nice playing Simon and Martin. I did these recordings of Quadriglia and Giga a while back. For Quadriglia I mistakenly translated "Balli popolari in Abruzzo" into "Popular ballad in Abruzzo”. The correct translation is "Folk dances in Abruzzo." My playing is slow. I did not know that "Giga" is "an Italian Jig." Mine isn’t a jig. Finally, I thought that since these are Italian tunes, then there must be tremolo. Even though it isn’t notated, I added a measured tremolo to the quarter notes. That altered things a bit. Both come from the 72-tune ABC file Martin mentioned. I really wasn’t planning on posting these here.

Good effort Brian. And interesting, the tremolo on a 4/4ed jig does sound experimental! Thanks for posting.
I’ve just discovered that this Giga, jig, is called In Tal Bosc. [edit correction: not In Tal Bosc but Giga Piacentina]
Bosc might mean woods, I’ll see what Google thinks...

The last tune in this set played on a set of pipes(?) seems to be the same one.
I’m not sure if the octave mandolin is the most authentic instrument for this...

Hi Simon, this giga is not called In tal bosc but only Giga or sometimes Giga piacentina (i.e. from Piacenza), In tal bosc is a little song between Bigordino and Giga (only 10 seconds) on La piva dal Carner set. I hope I was helpful

Simon: The Giga on my sheet music is in 6/8 time says La Ciapa Rusa. This is how it sounds when played properly:

The instrument in the center of the illustration looks remarkably similar to the one Dennis plays. I can't remember the name of it

I recall when I did my version I had just received a new Red Bear Neapolitan pick and wanted to try tremolo with it, it didn't mater if the song called for tremolo. I was going to play tremolo.

Wow ... these are fun! Saving the PDF for future reference for sure.

Love those La Ciapa Rusa tracks, thanks Brian.
Though geographically different and with different instruments, they are quite similar in some ways to this: https://youtu.be/DUJE4n2DqEo (love it)

Quadriglia & Sbrando (trad. Northern Italian dance tunes)

These are two Northern Italian dance tunes in 6/8 time, played as a set, starting on the quadriglia and going straight into the sbrando. Mandocello bass line from Evelyn Tiffany-Castiglioni's setting in "Evelyn's Big Book for Mandolins for 2015".

    1898 Giuseppe Vinaccia mandolin
    Vintage Viaten tenor guitar
    Suzuki MC-815 mandocello

These two tunes are from the same old ABC collection discussed in this thread started by Simon last year. This is the third time I have recorded them: first individually on solo mandolin back in 2010 (see my earlier post in this thread), then in Evelyn's quartet arrangement in 2015. This new recording improves on those older ones, I think: faster and more fluent, and also less cluttered by omitting Evelyn's second mandolin part.

These tunes are also in our group repertoire -- we played both of them last Thursday.

    Another fine performance Martin.

Oh, I remember that. I would take .abc files and print them out but because the notes were under ‘N:’ instead of ‘W:’ they wouldn’t get printed out beneath the TAB. I have literally books full of TAB that have their notes omitted
