Speranze Perdute

This waltz by Alessandro Morelli has long been one of my favourite Italian tunes. I've been meaning to record it complete with the second mandolin part from the 1920s Paolilli trio arrangement for some time, but have only just got around to it.

The sheet music for this (without second mandolin) is at Jim Garber's site:

My recording has the first mandolin part on the Ceccherini (which I find has the most suitable tone for these ballo liscio tunes), the second mandolin part on the Embergher and a strummed tenor guitar rhythm. Speed seems very variable on this tune, and the accordion versions tend to be very fast indeed. My version is a bit slower, at precisely the tempo given in Sheri Mignano's book: she has marked the tune moderato and gives a metronome count of 136bpm. I think that works pretty well.

The images used for the video are a collage of pictures associated in some form with the title -- I have kept this deliberately serendipitous and have shied away from the overly obvious allegories which come up when searching for "Lost Hope".

Lovely. That's one I'll be working on. Thanks.

Alessandro Morelli (1875-1918): Speranze Perdute (Lost Hope, Espoirs perdus).

I have recorded this classic Italian waltz a few times before, but made an updated version after listening to the wonderfully atmospheric rendition by Mike Guggino and Barrett Smith on their recent album "Mia Dolce Farfalla" -- I've always thought this tune benefits from being played slower than the usual breakneck speed, and this time play it with a bit of rubato rather than strict tempo.

Using the Paolilli edition (without repeats or second mandolin):

Not all hope is lost, when you play your Vinaccia, Martin. I like the arrangement with the tenor guitar strumming the chords and the mandolin playing tremolo with a slight rubato.
