"Ave Maris Stella" is a medieval Marian hymn, usually sung at Vespers, which has been adapted by many composers of liturgical music. The setting I have used was published in a 1950s music book for German secondary schools. The composer is Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) who used a German folk version of the hymn, from the town of Paderborn in Westphalia. I have played Schroeder's three voices on two mandolins and mandocello. 1898 Giuseppe Vinaccia mandolin (x2) Suzuki MC-815 mandocello https://youtu.be/dBlUordlxME Martin
I didn't know this melody, although it seems to be fairly local to me. Thank you for the nice recording!
I really like the tremolo mandolin. Is that the second voice?
Thanks, Dennis and Christian. Yes, the tremolo mandolin is a counter melody sitting above the main melody -- just singing "Ave Maria, Ave Maria" against the words of the hymn ("Meerstern, ich dich gruesse! O Maria hilf! Gottes Mutter suesse! O Maria hilf! Maria, hilf uns allen aus unsrer tiefen Not!" / "Sea Star, I salute you! Help us Maria! Sweet Mother of God! Help us Maria! Maria, help us all in our dire need!"). Very cheerful! Here is a scan of the relevant page from the school book: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/a...4&d=1663179444 Martin
I like the lonesome feel from the tremolo, nice one Martin.
