This is the tune to a well-known song by Ewan MacColl (1915-1989), in a setting by Nigel Gatherer who has added a bass line and harmony: https://www.nigelgatherer.com/tunes/...wtTh/SwtTh.pdf https://www.nigelgatherer.com/tunes/...tTh/SwtThc.pdf I am playing the melody on mandolin, with tenor guitar backing and mandocello bass line. On the repeat, I have added Nigel's harmony on second mandolin, played on the Embergher. A very nice recording, Martin, you must be playing the bass line an octave lowee than notated? The Embergher does a fine tremolo job.
Thanks, Christian. No, the bass line is played at the notated pitch -- Nigel's bass line is notated for cello in bass clef and has a fairly narrow range, between the open mandocello G and the open D. It's mainly a punchy rhythm. The harmony line is more interesting, but both together make the arrangement complete on the repeat. Martin
Lovely melody. Enjoyed the accompaniments too. Happy Holidays to you.
Thanks, Ginny -- Happy Holidays to you as well! Currently recording some Baroque dances, but then it's time to move on to the seasonal repertoire, I think! Martin
Very nice! I realised only when I heard your instrumental version that I know this song - not as sung by Ewan MacColl but in a cover version. I want to say Phil Beer but I'm not sure.
Thanks, Dennis. Quite a few covers of this song over the years. It's on the first Planxty album, and there are also covers by Maddy Prior, Dave Burland, Jean Redpath, Jon Boden & Sam Sweeney, Rufus & Martha Wainwright, John Faulkner and no doubt a few more I'm not aware of. Martin
I have definitely heard Jon Boden sing this, yes. I thought I'd heard another one too ... But never mind, we have your instrumental version now!
Sweet playing Martin. Here’s Ewan singing: https://ewanmaccoll.bandcamp.com/tra...-flow-softly-2
Beautiful playing, Martin. I like the repeat with the harmony on the Emberger.
