I cut ‘em about 3/8” - 1/2” from the tuning post then give ‘em a downward bend with a long nose plier. Just do it so the end is clear of the peghead...
You might reconsider the heavy gauge strings. The mandolin scale length is short and as you play higher pitches the string length gets even shorter....
