- Biography:
- Platying music makes me smile when all else fails. I was raised on Bluegrass from the start.
I began playing mandolin, guitar and banjo in 1965. I joined a Bluegrass band with my friends in school in 1968. We were called the Bluegrass Buddies, Jimmy Haley [ Guitar ], Louis Pyrtle aka Lou Reid [ bass ], Myron Nunn [ banjo ] and me on mandolin. We won numerous awards art fiddlers conventions throughout North Carloina and Virgina, including the biggest one of all at that time period ,Union Grove. We bagan playing at festivals in NC, Va, Ga, Tenn., Maryland, RI, and continued playing together until 1977. We went by the name of Second Edition { incl. Hersie McMilian-banjo , and Jim Smith -rythym guitar/bass } then changed it to Southbound untill we dis-banded in 1977. Jim Haley and Lou Reid were the first members of Quicksilver. I have been in other Bluegrass bands since then one by the name of Steel Rail, and now I'm back with my old pal Hersie McMillian and two more guys in the Blu-Vue band.
