    Re: Luthier in NE Florida?

I’m not sure if he’s officially retired, but Ross Teigen in Hawthorn at least had a stellar reputation.

Re: Best Place to Shop For Mandolins

This is. Why are you shopping for mandolins with Guitar Center and Sam Ash?
  5. Re: Mandolins are 2-3x more than equivelent guitars?

It looks like Eastman is getting into the market for $399:

Mike, can you share pictures to frame that contrast?

It may not have all of the requested scale, but I’m guessing you’ll like it when you buy it!

Re: Getting Started in 2024 - What's The Move?

Seeing that you are in Massachusetts, you might benefit from a trip to The Music Emporium in Lexington. But based on your stated goals and budget(s), I don’t think you’re going to be satisfied until...

Re: Getting Started in 2024 - What's The Move?

Northfield might be discussed as the entry point into professional mandolins, especially F-styles.

I think you’ve answered your own question here. Were I in your position, I would look for a...

    Re: Top Current Makers

I’m a big and vocal proponent of both builders, particularly if you like your new mandolins to look and sound old, but each will struggle to break into this list for the same reason: limited output....

    Re: Eastman MD315 resale value

I usually start at 70% of new replacement value ($919) which would be $643.30 and then decide whether I want to adjust for expected fees and shipping.
  14. Re: Flat top mandolins - What strings do you like and use?

It depends on the flattop, as the GHS PF270/A260 sets the I might install on a Mid-Missouri/Big Muddy would differ from the D’Addario EJ62 strings I would put on a Flatiron 1N or EJ73’s for a Redline...

    Re: Giacomel A-5

I agree, though the aesthetics of the back are on my lowest rung of reasons to buy or avoid a mandolin. I certainly prefer the look to a J5.

Icaro must still be looking for that apartment.

Re: It is just not right - What to try?

How long have you had it? Sometimes it takes our ears a bit to adjust to a new instrument if it sounds suitably different from its predecessor. I would start by experimenting with the replaceables:...

At the very least, it qualifies as artificial.
  25. Re: Pick selection time: And the survey says……

My mandolins definitely sound different with different picks. Some of those differences sound better to my ear. And some of those picks cost $35. YMMV.
