I can hardly believe I'm writing this, but the Bothy Band are to appear at Celtic Connections on 22nd January in Glasgow, Scotland.

Great tune so I'll raise you this one with twin mandolin harmony:

The construction of my mandolins differs from most. First, I use the old Sobell style neck joint, so the neck and block are set into the ribs. Its all one unit. But then I go a little further than...
We have the final edit of our mini documentary about Bill Monroe's July 9 Gibson F-5 featuring David Harvey, George Gruhn and others discussing the impact of the world's most famous mandolin.

There is something of the same dilemma with Scottish and Irish sessions in UK & Ireland and elsewhere (not to mention English, Welsh, Scandi etc).
You don't always know what you're in for when...
Here's my latest offering, a lovely little jig in G minor recorded with a marvelous 1917 Gibson A-4 on loan from a friend.

While in Cape Breton last week, I bought a CD called my celtic strings by Pius MacIsaac, featuring Pius playing guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. I'm still in Nova Scotia, and have been listening to this...
A friend recently requested this tune so I thought I'd take a swing at it with my Weber octave mandolin. My version is loosely based on a solo performance by Frankie Gavin (though he plays it a...
For application in a Monroe setting, you can find quite a few straight arpeggio runs in his instrumentals. For example, the B part of "Old Daingerfield" is just climbing arpeggios over the A, D and...
Having arpeggios under your fingers is always a good thing. This is a video from Christopher Henry years ago, it’s dark and gets very fast get a slowdowner (Audiostretch is a good one) and work on...
I'm pretty certain than many of us would probably not be playing Celtic music (and indeed Eastern European music) on the mandolin or bouzouki if it weren't for Andy Irvine. And he seems to be still...
They aren't a bluegrass band and I'm not trying to say they are, but I am a big fan of Rising Appalachia, who have deep roots in fiddle and banjo music and traditional singing.
They are, to my...
This is great. It's a tribute to the late Dennis Cahill.

Wow I couldn't disagree more.
I suppose if you only get your music from public performances and public media, but most musicians do play for fun on the side and that is where new tunes are picked...
His brother Enda, best known for banjo, plays the mandolin extremely well also. Musical family! Fergal's fiddle tune a day is a must see for my bride the fiddle player.
Fergal did a few mandolin tunes on his last 365 "fiddle tune a day" series.
He bought a Collings on one of their US tours.
Interesting, thanks!
Hi Perry,
Of course there's no one way to go about learning chord melody. That's part of what's so exciting about it. I appreciate that the steps you listed have been a gateway into the style...
Just went to see Sam Grisman last Sunday at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle - and holy cow, what a show. David Grisman sat in with them for about half the show and they played lots of Grisman / Garcia...

I think it’s worth noting that any music you can find on youtube can be played back at half speed. As many have said, there is pretty much nothing better for a musician’s ear than transcribing.
Soon the NJs will be mainstream, the way it's going.
Jeff Beck was by a long shot my favorite of the Brit guitar heroes. I think he (and Peter Green) i transcend that category. Was hoping to hear...
I'm sorry to hear of the death of the Irish box player and singer Seamus Begley. He was a larger than life character.
