    Re: Bluegrass Jam…just kidding.

There is something of the same dilemma with Scottish and Irish sessions in UK & Ireland and elsewhere (not to mention English, Welsh, Scandi etc).

  9. McFadden's Handsome Daughter: solo octave mandolin

A friend recently requested this tune so I thought I'd take a swing at it with my Weber octave mandolin. My version is loosely based on a solo performance by Frankie Gavin (though he plays it a...

    Re: Arpeggios in Bluegrass

For application in a Monroe setting, you can find quite a few straight arpeggio runs in his instrumentals. For example, the B part of "Old Daingerfield" is just climbing arpeggios over the A, D and...

    Andy Irvine is 81 today!

I'm pretty certain than many of us would probably not be playing Celtic music (and indeed Eastern European music) on the mandolin or bouzouki if it weren't for Andy Irvine. And he seems to be still...

They aren't a bluegrass band and I'm not trying to say they are, but I am a big fan of Rising Appalachia, who have deep roots in fiddle and banjo music and traditional singing.

His brother Enda, best known for banjo, plays the mandolin extremely well also. Musical family! Fergal's fiddle tune a day is a must see for my bride the fiddle player.
