    I built a little circuit with a transistor etc, that is powered from a 9v battery. Although it is an amplifier circuit it doesn’t increase the volume but matches the impedance.

    I doubt that the plastic is taking any load. Think cigar box guitar, ie the neck takes the load but you can’t see it for the box.

    Have you checked if the Almuse pickups match size wise. They are a common replacement as well as used by many builders. Specifically designed to avoid the weak string problems.
