I had a trinity college about 12 years ago that was fantastic with heavy Guage strings that I wish I never sold.
That had a shorter scale length. The mandolin I play now had a body size that's...
The fact you started with nice people and good music is an indication it is not as grim as you might have felt. You could've shown up and meant a few unwelcoming people or music with terrible rhythm...
A little while ago I was fortunate to happen upon a Northfield F2. I'm very glad I did. The sound and smoothness of playing is fantastic. One of the best mandolins I've encountered.

James is an excellent resource. I was lucky to play some music with him and visit occasionally. I regret not taking the time to have him show me how to build a mandolin, when I only lived 5 minutes...
I am happy with the tone and volume. It's not too dark. Sounds pretty balanced to me. Someone gave me a fossilized ivory bridge and was considering if it was worth having fitted. I don't think I...
No! Only a few of us have this experience in the US! It's just an amazing instrument so I went all for it. https://youtube.com/@TheHurdyGurdyWizard
Don't get one unless your willing to sell all...
I really enjoy the oval hole eastman I found. Wasn't a fan for a long time, but have been really happy with the sound and projection.

Jill, any mandolin problem is 98% of the time a first world problem!;)
I've owned guitars and mandolins for over 30 years. My oldest is 28 years old and I bought it new. I have mandolins I've played live weekly for 10+ years (daily home practice included) None of my...
If they are super traditionalists, you may make them cringe. But if your up for it, learn the Monaghan Jig and O'Farrell's Welcome to Limerick.

Yes, one of our Irish group has also sent me some breton tunes to learn, although I really enjoy doing jigs and slip jigs on this thing.

It is my Mowry Octave mandolin... Can be...
I had some free time today to record this...
I really love the way these two instruments sound together...

Definitely true about good drummers keeping good time with anything. That's the trick.
Not being a pure Irish Trad player, I am often wishing more musicians would pay attention to the "good"...
Now I have some time to explain...
About 14 years ago I got into mandolin. I'd played guitar most of my life, but always loved Irish music. Eventually I fell in with some Old Time players who...
It is done.
It has been made clear to me that Andrew Mowry's octave mandolins are the best there are.
I agree, this has turned into a thread, that any devoted trad student could really grow from. I think, I may start at the top, and go down and learn what I can from each recording.
Thanks...
People will say all kinds of things. I have a flat top oval hole. It can be just as loud as and arch top f, AND it's got a more full sound in my opinion. It's also a Mowry, which I think makes a huge...
My 20" scale length Rozawood OM has Mandola strings on it. They sound fantastic. Perfect tension for drive.
Remember, a good instrument is not just for making music, although that's even better if it does. A good instrument is also a work of art. I have way more instruments than I need, yet I do enjoy just...

That mandolin has a virzi in it. It's a Rozawood Om-2. I love it. I've not heard an octave mandolin I like better yet, flat top, archtop, non virzi or otherwise.

I agree. If only we could keep the volume with the mellowness! Well...Actually I do like the A and E strings new, but the G and the D, are better a bit older.
