Eric, I'm so pleased to see this beautiful instrument in good hands. It sounds great in the duo context. I'm sure that it will sound better and better as time passes.

I agree that this is disappointing. I know that the San Diego folks have put so much work into preparation and several great events were planned. (The Rudy Cipolla celebration comes first to mind.)

What a great piece, performed by a great band. It's wonderful to hear Dr. Bates rockin' that bass. Thanks for posting.
Up here in Northeast Iowa there is a strong tradition of Norwegian-American dance music, rooted in the dance parties that farmers used to hold in their homes back in the early to mid 20th century. A...
I should mention that the sheet music for these Menuets has long been freely available from my Mandotopia website. Here's the link to the pdf book containing all 50 Menuets, arranged for two...
I am very pleased to see this discussion come around once more. I thank my old LMO co-member, John Rice, for bringing it up. I especially thank my fellow CMSA member, Dr. Margo, for his thorough...
I have made the score and parts available for another one of my older mandolin orchestra pieces. Schroeder's Idea was commissioned by my friends in the Louisville Mandolin Orchestra to help celebrate...
I've just created a web page for another of my older mandolin orchestra pieces from my backlog. This one was commissioned by Douglas Back for his Fretworks ensemble at the Baldwin Magnet School in...
I remember the workshop that DougC mentions at the CMSA in Minneapolis and it was a great one. My memory is that we got him to talk a little about the preparation for and recording of the Original...
Avi Avital's recent CD, The Art of the Mandolin, receives a very positive review in the current (January 2021) issue of Gramophone. I won't quote all four paragraphs but the review begins:
"Avi...
I want to thank Tom for taking the time and effort to transpose the Preludio from D down to G. I love the way it plays and sounds down there on the mandolin. I find that I quickly got over missing a...
When I was working on my two Telemann books for Mel Bay I played (or attempted to play) through hundreds of pieces from many collections. One of my favorite books was the Barenreiter edition of the...
I just checked iTunes and was pleased to see that my solo mandolin CD - Deer Tracks (for solo mandolin) - is listed. They've created a nice little page that includes four of my CDs and also links to...
I'm having a great time and learning a lot. I get the point that $150 for non-members might seem like a lot (I would have suggested a slightly lower price point) but attending the physical convention...
Hi Jim,
I hope you enjoy this new piece. Please give my regards to Fabio. It was such a pleasure to meet him a year ago in Normal, IL.
Each of my compositions that I post on my So Many Tunes...
Just about a year ago I "published" my second short suite for big mandolins, the Spring Suite, which had been preceded by a Winter Suite. Recently I got around to making this new Summer Suite.

It's been fun seeing this piece by Lawes getting attention. I'm afraid I need to complicate things a little now though.
I received a private message from Matthew in Texas asking good questions...
Martin, I really like that Ayre from Lawes and your recording of it. I've been listening to quite a lot of English viol music the last few months, mostly recordings by Phantasm and the Fretwork...
I came across this nice Saraband for Lyra-Viol while slowly reading my way through The Consort Music of William Lawes by John Cunningham, Boydell Press, 2010. I adapted the transcription in the book...
When I started this thread back in February I fully intended to make some more mandolin orchestra pieces available in the near future. Well, the near future turned out to be a little different from...
I've been slow to jump in here in praise of Peter's beautiful work because I wanted to get a short video ready first.
I'm the happy owner of Peter's "classical flattop" #248 (pictures and samples...
It's always good to see Rob MacKillop on this forum, often with a new interest and asking thoughtful questions. I'm happy to see that I may be able to offer a footnote to Eugene's post about...
Yesterday I learned that Carlo has also uploaded a YouTube lesson covering his approach to playing the Presto from the G minor Sonata no. 1 (BWV 1001). This is another one of my personal favorite...
Toomas, I knew that my transcriptions of the Oswald 12 had been downloaded many times years ago when I would check statistics on them. I haven't done that for several years now. I am glad they found...
I was delighted to discover this morning that Carlo Aonzo has recently created a video where he demonstrates his approach to playing the Allemanda from Bach's D minor Partita no. 2 for solo violin.
