Re: NMD, But there's a problem

My 9 year old keeps asking me when I'm only going to play my octave mandolin so he can have my Eastman. It's a good problem to have.
  4. Re: Mandolin for Dummies/Mandolin Exercises for Dummies

I'd say, imho, that any mandolin player should have Julin's books as part of their arsenal. Julin's books and Marilyn Mair's are the best mandolin books have been written in years.

    Mandolin for...

I'm sure you know to keep her playing and not throwing it down in pain (sounds like me...) you need a really good setup.

Re: NMD, But there's a problem

I came to mandolin as a classically trained violinist/bluegrass fiddler and self taught guitarist. When I picked up a mandolin I swear those old fiddle tunes and classical pieces literally just fell...

Re: NMD, But there's a problem

Upgrade to a 750. She'll be ready for that soon enough! LOL. (I tried to interest my sons in mandolin to no avail, but I never expected my youngest to run out and buy a banjo -- the shame of it all!...

Re: NMD, But there's a problem

The Suzuki method (classes that you both go to) is probably a great option now, it encourages cooperation between players of different instruments, experience, aptitude and age..

Re: NMD, But there's a problem

Just tune it like a banjo and she won't have anything to do with it!

(Actually, a better solution is to get one for her too!)

Re: NMD, But there's a problem

    Good for her.

You can always get another and start playing twin mandolin with your daughter. (The first time I did twin/harmony mandolin was truly special.)

    Re: Memorizing a song

People have heard me play a tune on the mandolin and they’ve said, ‘oh, beautiful, how do you remember all those notes? I wish I was as talented as you are!’

Re: Just Ordered my First Mandolin, Advice?

Nothing to do with playing, but I suggest getting a hard case. Mandolin is a small easily kicked about our knocked over instrument with high string tension. Every time I put mine in the car trunk in...

Re: Just Ordered my First Mandolin, Advice?

I came to mandolin from guitar.
Some people tell guitarists to think of the mandolin as the bottom four strings of a guitar turned upside down.
Dont do this... It is a bad way to think about it. ...

Play, play, play. Listen, emulate, look up songs on YouTube and slow them down to .5 speed to get all the notes. Learn easy/beginner versions of fiddle tunes. Do it all!

Re: Just Ordered my First Mandolin, Advice?

Get a lesson to get good mechanics, either online or existing videos. Chris Thule, Mike Marshall, Don Julin and Pete Martin have good YouTube videos to get started.

    Have fun.
