I owned a 2003 A9 for some years, but could not adjust to the neck. It was loud, but I found out that I actually prefered the tone on my 1949 A40, so the A9 got sold.
Nothing beats the tone of John and his Loar.

Don't you love it when a zombie thread wakes up and starts walking around..;)
This is the post we all wait for, but never believe will appear! Fantastic! :)
I was thinking of the builder who made original F-style mandolins that sounded good and cost $500. THAT is a good deal!
No mandolin ad should leave out "plays like buttah".
I live in Norway, and will be going to NY (and USA) for the first time in September. My nr1 tourist attraction will be the Statue of Liberty, which I will pass on my way to Staten Island and Mandolin...
I have reason to believe that Mr. Duncan is no slouch on the mandolin or the guitar either..Another extremely talented guy.
Hey, I described the Gibson as "Gibsonesqe" AND guessed it had the sitka top! Must be my new hearing aids.. or maybe plain luck:)

No offend intended. It's just that it's the first time I've heard anyone on this forum say that Thile and Marshall play with an awful tone. You are of course entitled to your opinion, but if those...
As a Norwegian, my question is: Troll?
Get the loudest teens or twenties Gibson A you can find. Tone to die for!
My point was, of course, and it's repeated ad nauesam in this forum, that any A-style is a lot more bang for the buck than any F-style.
Going from a little A-style to a little F-style isn't necessarily an upgrade.
Most of the pre-Beatles stuff don't measure up. I think the most magic was in the merging of the two musical visions into something greater than the parts.
If you lack a sense of humour, you will face some hard times here at the forum. My impression is that people here are helpful and knowledgeable, but sometimes you will get some "tongue in cheek"...
