Similar response. And, freak coincidence, I also have been playing open back banjo for a couple of months with some help from Adam Hurt. I never got banjo before but clawhammer is very interesting.
I haven't listened to the new Thile album, but...The banjo definitely has an advantage as a solo instrument, but mandolin I think can work very well too, depending on what you mean. As accompaniment...
Hey there!
Just in case you haven't seen this yet.

just my observation but she uses open fist when playing soft and closed fist when playing loud
Sierra just got her '26 Gibby 'dola back from Dave Harvey, and posted a very brief sampling on Facebook. Here it is for those who are able to see these videos, just click the photo to play it.

Mandolins are already travel sized instruments; I can't imagine wanting something smaller or weaker sounding!
I've always traveled with the best instrument I own- deployed to war, down the heart...
Hi there. Quite a bit different actually - likely easier to talk about everything, or finish a video on our end (in the plan). I'll start with a few differences.
For starters: This mandolin design...
Just picked up Travelin' McCoury's, first song has me up front and center! Love the new Del Album as well, really strong song writing on that.
Caught them at Grey Fox this year, and a lot of times...
local boys! Cool to see them out your way!

I've always been a fan of Ronnie. His playing is always tasteful but not overdone. His tone is killer.
Right on, Darren! Particularly numbers 2 & 3 and I also love the Dead covers.
I would start here....raw and earthy as can be!

Dang, that high end screams! Nice find.
That's lovely. Sounds great and you're obviously smitten!
It's beautiful, Darren - here's to lots more music on it.
I think it's more likely a 30's instrument. Having that tailpiece cover makes it really special in my eyes. Make sure you post pictures in the Strad-O-Lin social group.
That's a lovely Stradolin. Sounds great too. Good score.
That's a beaut! They have a lot of charm
Life is short. Eat off the good china.....
