Re: To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade?

Years ago I had a Breedlove OO that I loved. Traded it in for a Collings MT-O. I’ve had 4 MT-O’s since then, liked everyone of them so much that I decided to stop playing the catch and release game...

Re: Picks of wood and other materials

You’ll get about an hour of play out of a wood pick, substantially less if you do the slightest bit of tremolo. And you’ll fill the windings of your strings with sawdust.

    That being said, the...
  3. Re: Wanting a better treble out of my Collings Mandolin

Collings ovals like heavier A and E strings if you want stronger treble. I personally like GHS Pure Nickel and Monels from various makers. The wound strings in those sets brings out the dry, woody...

    Re: Love for Ovals

Count me in, I love the oval sound. '24 A Jr and and Collings MT2-O here. Owned plenty others also. The Gibson is loud and cranky and sonorous and a finicky little thing - a true joy, the pinnacle of...
  6. Re: New Kentucky KM-606 mandolins are in the wild!

Make sure you look at the necks, the Eastman is a bit narrower and more of a 'V', which didn't agree with my hand. The Kentucky I had around the same time (years ago) was a bit wider and more of a...

    Re: Octave mandolin less-expensive choices

Gives it a much fuller sound, way more bass. Gave it some authority. I’ve tried the ‘blue’ EJ72 lights and the ‘orange’ EJ76 mediums. The 76’s definitely gave it a fuller sound but the difference...

Eastman MDO 305, get a set of mandola strings with it. Elderly has one on the way. Have them hold it for you.

  13. Re: String preferences for Collings MTO oval mandolins?

Classical, Celtic, World, Nordic, Scottish, Folk, etc. The oddball stuff. Not much Bluegrass, but occasionally I like to learn an Monroe tune.
  14. Re: String preferences for Collings MTO oval mandolins?

I put the Thomastiks (Heavy, whatever they call that) on the MTO last night, played it for about a half hour, tuned it back up and put it away. Came home today, every string was still in tune except...

I’m pretty sure Gilchrist stopped coming here because he kept getting skipped over on the traveling pick sampler.
  16. Re: String preferences for Collings MTO oval mandolins?

I have a set on mine now, I think. They mellow it similar to the Silk and Steel and Monels. I liked them but not quite as much as the ones I just listed.
  17. Re: String preferences for Collings MTO oval mandolins?

I get a little longer out of them than I do a phosphor bronze.
