FYI - I built an unconventional version of an F5 (violin edges, violin varnish) for my first mandolin and used figured cherry for B&S and sinker redwood for the top. Cherry neck. I'm not a musician...

Finally finish this F5 inspired mandolin. Only took 3 years.

In ignorance and haste, I made my headstock a little too thick and then added veneers to both sides to make it worse. I can get strings on and tightened but just barely. I've scrapped and sanded...

She's ready to go to a real luthier to finish the nut and string it. Hopefully it will sound good enough to warrant keeping it and applying a finish.

Thanks for that Bob. This is my first mandolin so it is a work/dream in progress. Every step now is heart-rendering but I get through it.
